vk timing prob (i think?)

hey guys,

dad was driving his vk commo to and from work, no problems till the other day he was finished work and car wouldnt start, was not getting any spark, he replaced the coil to find out it was actaully not a fault of the coil, it was apart of the computer timing thingo, according to 2 parts sales men both recomending that we get an older distributer and wire it up and disconnect a lead that was on the bell housing from memory,

anyway after doing this still no go, but we then put the old coil back in and was not starting due to timing he worked on the timing alittle more and we got it started although still running rough, we were going to drive it home and work on timing at home, thats when we stumbled apon the next problem,

we had jumper leads connected and we were just packing them up and the tools while the car was still running just after closing the bonnet, (about 1 min after) the car died, and would not start, very similar to the original problem,

dad and i were wondering can the coil be fried if terminals were crossed and would it have lasted running for over 5-10 mins?

if anyone has any suggestions what so ever we would appriciate it greatly,

thanks for your time.

Dean

IS it EFI or carb. They use different types of ignition systems. If it is carb it uses EST, the distributor has nothing in it except for a rotor button. There is a sensor at the rear of the engine that pokes through a hole in the bell housing. This is used to find Cyl no1. I have seen these fail when the engine warms up.
If it is EFI, then it uses a electronic ignition the same as the earlier blue motor. The module may have failed when the engine heats up. A u\s coil may also cause the module to fail.
