As some of you know I work for Ateco importers of Warn Winches.
Most of you would of seen or heard of Warn 9.0R that Warn have built only 200 of in the states and one is fitted to Cheezy's Buggy.
http://www.warn.com/truck/9.0R_winch.shtml
If we were to provide a winch suitable for Australian Rock Crawling what would you want?
Capacity?
Size of drum?
Fairlead?
Remote or switch?
Steel Cable or bare drum?
Our Atv wiches seem to work for rear suspension preloading.
All feedback will be appreciated.
Reply here, PM or e-mail.
Thank you Jason Lock

What Winch are you talking about regarding ATV winch for Susp loading? If its the Warn one i have seen 2 fail within about 10 min use on 2 different rigs. I use a Superworks one and it has been working fine for ages. Also one of the 2 rigs i now had a warn fail uses a Superworks winch now and has had no problems. The Warn ones exploded the gear set. They wont cop the shock loads.
As for a Winch for Rock Crawling the Warn 9.0R works well but if one could be built using the old 6000pound motor(The Small One) it would be even better. Rope is best to save on weight. We generaly just buy the Warn 6000pound winch and cut the drum down to suit. Its a pity the 6000pound now comes with the same size motor as the 9000pound though.

Thanks Ruff.
Was thinking of using the 6000 as a base with the same short drum as the 9.0R and the SDP. Was going to hyave a look at the Superworks winch.

As long as you can get the 6000 with the old style small motor this would be the best otion. As everyone will be chassing weight savings as the sport gets more popular. If you can only get the current style motor then if its a 6 or a 9 it wont realy matter. It will come down to which ever is the cheapest way to go.
The super winch im using on my rear axle is the $120 one from Supercheap but its holding up fine and it takes some abuse with the way my rear suspension is set up. I would have liked to have bought a Warn but at $300+ i wasnt going to risk it breaking first time out. Guys in the US seam to be having good results with them but i have heard of the same breakages as we had as well.

Capacity? - 6000lb
Size of drum? - 100 - 120mm wide. Enough to hold 10 metres of rope.
Fairlead? - Not really required, most buggy's run the cable down to the front diff and don't really require a fairlead.
Remote or switch? switch
Steel Cable or bare drum? plasma or similar.
Something like this -

AS pos and ruff have said: 6000lb and between 6-10m of plasma, enough to go 2 wheelbases basically.
lighter the better, as ruff said small motor, so starting with one of the cheaper brands of winchs is goin to be easier as they often have a much higher gearbox ratio >160:1 so a smaller motor will do the job.

Minimum winch for WEROCK - 6000lb. Ruling out the 3500lb.
Also don't see a need for anything above 6000 as its not used to winch with anyway.
6.25: Winches
The following are winch guidelines for competition:
Winches in working order are required on the vehicle at all times while competing.
6.25.1: All professionally built and sold electric, hydraulic, and power take off winches, with a minimum capacity of 6000 pounds on the first wrap of cable, are acceptable.
6.25.2: Winches must use rope type cable substitute or cable with minimum break strength of nine thousand five hundred (9500) pounds (5/16 steel cable).

Oh and it would need to be a funky red colour aswell.
Who will you be marketing this too, just rockcrawling competitors or everyone.
I wouldn't imagine many people (other than competitors) would want one as it limits them to very short cable and the weight they save on a trail rig is not a factor.
Cool idea, run with what the yanks have, but see about wacking on a 6000lb motor instead. Just to be different.

I really couldnt see anybody making any money out of making a winch like this one. The market is so small and most of the people in this game really dont have the money to spend on a cool winch. Most of the current comp buggyies already have a winch and anybody that is going to build themselves a buggy will probably just cut down a full sized unit. If you wanted to actually sell these winches I couldnt imagine anybody paying more than what a normal 6000lb winch is worth.
The only way I can see something like this being worthwile is for pure marketing reasons. Get these winches on the comp buggies and then get the comp buggies scene by the general public who go and buy a normal winch. This is how its working in the US.
Only thing here is that the buggy scene is so small and new that the exposure probably wont be that great. We have got a fair way to go before something like this will be worthwile IMO.

But sam the sport is growing so lockee could provide everyone that competes regurly in werock with a free winch then get the exposure to sell to general public

Just a insugnificant thought

Seriously though if warn was to release a winch like mentioned at a competetive price i would look at it as its one of the last things ive thought about for mine so yes its come down to what money i can afford but if a have a warn on my rig and a bid as* sticker its exposure for them and if only 2 people see it its 2 people that they didnt have to pay to advertise to Cheers Jamie H

I love my 9 R and 2500 ATV out back. I use and abuse them every weekend ATM and they are about the only things that havnt shyt themselves.
Setting tracks for a comp I tend too drive harder stuff than in a comp, all the rocks I drive are undriven or touched. I havnt had any troubles todate and will keep on torturing them both for as long as I can.
