I am looking at a GQ patrol which supposably has exhaust and extractors. What does the standard exhaust manifold look like? What should i look for to see if it does have extractors? I haven't seen enough or heard enough to tell!! Help!!
Thanks!

to put it simply

standard manifold is a big arse cast thing that looks like 1 big cast item.
where extractors are round seperate bits of exhaust pipe that go down along the gearbox..

google for a photo of extractors to help yourself

Coolo!! Thanks for that. Reading on this forum, extractors seem to make a good bit of difference!!

Agreed.
Factory manifold is pretty much set up like extractors any ways.

Definite increase on my RB30, extractors and 2.5 inch system definitely picked up the low down power.

So for the 89 GQ 4.2 petrol (carby) is it worth spending on extractors? I have had mixed results from other cars in the past with before and after comparisons. It seems the general consensus is more show - not so much go. Or does it make more diff when comparing to diesel motor?

I've had a good result from fitting extractors and a 2.5 system. The motor revs a lot free'er up over 3 thousand revs. It runs just as well with 35 s as it used to on 33s with standard exhaust

Ok - I'll put a set on if I can "aquire" them... going to do stuff all for fuel economy I take it.

First of all you need to find out if your patrol has an IFS front end and then we can help out a bit more ;)

Yeap, that is the first modification I have on my list. I have sourced a place that will convert the front end to IFS. The cost is only $8000. The guys tells me the increase in offroad performance is exceptional.

ive got extractors on my td42, not much difference cept its farkin loud now. they do let it breathe a bit easier, but i wouldnt pay good money for them. mine were "aquired" along with a custom 2.5" exhaust. they are good for the engine, but not worth the money.

Yeah, I'm thinking of the IFS front end too. I also hear that the "on-road" feel is so much better than the live axel setup!
That's what all the 100 series GXL boys tell me up here lol...

Ok, I put extractors on my 97 GQ TD42 and noticed only the smallest amount of top end increase, bit more noise and that's about it. Save your money and go for a turbo!!! You will be happier in the long term.

Are you guys serious - you would spend $8k getting IFS ?

Surely it's not worth the money/hassle, either spend the $$ on lockers or sell the car and buy one that suits your needs better.

Mine is noticably free-er revving than without (they were on it when i got it but we had chimpboy's to compare with.

The noise difference though is huge for only a very VERY small amount of extra go.

I think that you'd get way better bang for buck out of electronic ignition - at least if nothing else you dont have to reset points.
