They usually use a signal from the alternator.

I done a couple conversion on an 80 series with 6.5's and i used the original pulse sensor on the front timing cover this sent 4 pulses per revolution of the crank and this electronics dude recalibrated the tach to the correct no of pulses and modified it to work with the type of signal sent from the crank sensor. There is a tricky thing to the 6.5 sensor there's a 1k resistor that is intergrated into the plug of the sensor wiring and i cut the plug off 2 sensors to fit a different plug so i could connect the wiring then the tach wouldn't work, then eventually found the resistor in the plug.

I'm using a VT commodore alternater so that is out of the question, but i do still have the sensor in the timing cover with the idea that this could be adapted to the tacho, if you can remember where this was done that would be great.
