Strange Pinging Type Noise

Hey guys just got my feroza back from the mechanic, had a crack in the top tank fixed up and wanted them to look for any reason why it would be pinging. After all it was tuned and serviced less then a fortnight ago!

After driving it they said it sounds more like a heat shield rattling then pinging, even though the noise would be identicle. Problem is there aren't any heat shields that I know of! They removed the exhaust associated shields when the extractors and exhaust went on.

Anyone have any ideas?

My only other idea was the center caps on my mags are rattling around, wish they screwed in, might take them off and drive it, see if it goes away.

cheers
Brad

Did they check the timing whilst doing the service

could be the sound of a leaking exhaust manifold gasket

I wouldn't rule out pinging. Mine will do it at standard timing setting on BP Ultimate 98!

Try some BP Ultimate and see if that helps reduce it. ;)

Its not an engine bay splash guard that has fatigued apart, and is rattling

Splash gaurd hey, ill have to check that out. Might be worth putting some high octane fuel in and see how it goes, from memory it went a little better with some octane booster. Im sure it's pinging though. Probably needs a chip with the exhaust/pod, i know those mods on a turbo car would run quite rich and would need some ecu adjustment.

Exhaust gasket was replaced when the extractors went in so I doubt it would be that. I did find a small pin hole in one of the welds that is leaking, they're gonna have to touch that up!

Also the fan shroud had come loose on the bottom, took it back to mechanic and they fixed it up. It was making a terrible banging noise but definately wasnt the original pinging type noise.

My engines prolly farked, uses a litre of oil every 10 days and blows a fair bit of smoke when ya get up it.

 Unless you travel 400kms a day that's a lot of oil to be burning!

I doubt a chip is required for mild mods such as a pod & exhaust. I would probably suggest just disconnecting the battery overnight - to reset the ecu. When you take it for a drive the next day don't pussy foot it. Drive it like you would normally, and the ecu will re-program itself with the new variables.

Yikes! My Rotary does not even use that much!!

but the ecu should adjust itself automatically to run correctly once the mods where done

Quite a few jap ECU's need to be "reset" (ie: powerless) before they adjust themselves

Feroza ECU 's are very primative- they don't even control the ignition timing- strictly fuel only. Retarding the timing will fix the pinging if the 98 octance fuel doesn't.

Hmm some good ideas thanks guys!

Just got back from Fraser Island, handled itself quite well on the soft stuff.
Only did 450km and my oil dipstick was dry when I got home, took 1200ml of oil. Rings must be totally shagged, strange thing is you only ever see it blowing smoke if your really up it, which wasnt that often.

It pinged its tits off the entire time, it was fucking terrible, was on the way home just pinging driving in 5th. Stopped into BP and stuck a tank load of premium unleaded (not ultimate, almost died at the price) and I havnt heard it ping since.

Must say im questioning the ability of my mechanic if he couldnt workout that noise was pinging. Also wanted my top tank replaced, i think they've just soldered the crack up and its leaking again.

Cheers

Brad, see my post to your other thread. Pinging is very bad and will destroy your engine!

Yeah I know, this much pinging in one of my rb25's would have self destructed alllllong time ago.

It's only pinged once since changing over to PULP. Rang mechanic and he said oh yeah these newer cars sometimes need to run on pulp, seems like bullshit, it ran fine when i first got it on ULP. Seems to me he'd rather see it ping itself to death then get paid for a rebuild.

Anyone have a reputable mechanic in Brisbane? I thought I did but now i'm not so sure.

Got a timing light? Just retard the timing a bit and it should fix it. ;)

I shall have to invest, never had a car with adjustable ignition timing before so its all a bit new. All this stuff was done via laptop on the last car :D

Took my rig out to Nerangba yesterday, went real well, didnt overheat or carry on at all. Managed to get bogged for the first time. Not the smartest thing in the world, we went on there on our own, managed to get some dude on a trail bike to set off in search of a 4x4 to tow us out.

Ended up meeting another dude on his own so we hung out for the afternoon and pulled each other out of big ass bog holes all day! Heaps of fun, definately won't be doing any of that sorta stuff again on my own!

Cheers
