Hey i was driving on the beach and suddenly my car stopped working!!
and a bit of smoke came out of somewhere looked to be around gearbox region
Well the car still starts fine.. and i can change gears but when i let the clutch out the car doesnt take off... Nor does it stall..
I can put it into first gear.. take the clutch right out and the car stays idling!!!
What could be the problem? someone said linkages might of fallen out or something?
any ideas let me know
THANKXS people im stressin bad ;|

Check linkages first. from clutch pedal follow cable to the end to a screw bit. check still there and if so tighten up. should get some clutch feel.
Any noises when running from gbox area?
cheers

Man dont really like the sound of that. How old is the clutch?

clutch has been fine!! someone said i mightve burnt it out.. but i didnt thrash it anymore then i usually do.. and it was on a flat i wasnt even dune jumping..
approximately 10minutes before this happen... we didnt see a big drop off in the sand and droped apprixmately 1m... :| :| so this couldve had somethign to do it..
Previous services have said the clutch is fine but the gearbox bearings are loose...
it just isnt going into any gear.. thats y when i put it into 1st and let clutch out it still acts asif it is in neutral!!
so would this be cltuch problem or gearbox?

but after the drop is drove fine..
and then we went up somewhere and kinda got a bit stuck.. so i used low range to reverse out! and then i put it back in high range and took off and that was fine then it started loosin power and a decent ammount of smoke came out! and then i found whenever i tried to accelerate neither drive shaft would move...
Is this going to be expensive?
:(

sounds bad, can you try all gears with clutch out and see if there is any noises or movement.
Drain some of the gbox oil out and check for metal bits.
If it is gbox.
I know of a box u may be able to get it for a good $$. coming with my new wreck but have to give it back.
cheers

so am i understanding this?
it wont go in to gear? or it wont drive?
if it wont go in to gear i recon it is more than likely the clutch... although i dont know how it would lose all presure... buggerd the presur plate posibly?
check your g'box oil.. if that is fine. pull the box out. not to big of a deal and pull the clutch off. i recon there lyes your problem new clutch about $110

BTW i say more than likely clutch... coz u have to be goin REALY bad to get smoke out of a box!!! what did the smoke smell like? should be a dead give away, burning oil? or break/clutch?

I'll have some 1.3 Tcase gears for sale soon also.
sounds like clutch to me... leave the clutch out (foot off) and change gears... if you can do that without grinding noises.... i reckon clutch =)

hrm the handbrake mightve been slightly on while in the beach and the revs were going very high FUCK i hope that wasnt what done it haha
Well the story is it can go into gears but i dont think its actually goign into a gear.. cause i put it in a gear release the clutch and the car still acts asif its in neutral...
my old man thinks its just a linkage somewhere and thats why its not going into gear.. just got to clamp it again or something!!
any ideas? could it be something simple?
Cheers

May sound silly but is the tcase in gear? The tcase has a neutral as well.

yeah i know but the tcase is moving around fine.. and clicks into gears and stuff...but maybe its a linkage there? No drive shaft is getting any power so the car is basically stuck in neutral somewhere... except that all the gears can still move into place...
bit weird i will have to get a mechanic out to do a diagnosis i suppose... when you move the gear stick it goes into position but its not actually changing anything.. :|
my last service said that my bearings were a bit loose.. like thrust bearing and throwout or something :\

the pressure plate is that expensive? and wouldve that caused smoke when it went?
my old man claims the clutch is fine so he think its something with the box... the clutch isnt that old and it wasnt slipping or anything before was running perfect..

these things are always expensive, just depends on how u do it and who does the work.
Qs:
1) was the pressure plate and throwout changed at the clutch change or are u asuming the clutch is ok.
2) it could be farked as my clutch lasted about 5000k from the gearbox destroying it. Locked up on the freeway at 80ks
3) Have u read anything above in this post and any above mine?
cheers

sorry im all just panic and shit at moment im in the middle of my mock exams so i really should forget about my car for a bit lol
The clutch was done less then a year ago but was done before i bought it
last time when i changed the gearbox oil which was 4 weeks ago... the gearbox oil was grey... so maybe something just went?
Btw nic..keep that gearbox if you have it.. because this gearbox has done 220 000kms i should probably redo it anyways...as even if i fix this i probably have more problems with it...
just another question with taking the gearbox out... can you do it through the top? it appears the panel that goes around t-case and gearbox is just jammed on.. like it has a line and appears that you can lift it up...with a bit of a bang with the hammer...doesnt look welded or anything
Let me know
cheers guys

I will be up in perth for a week in a weeks time so i will get my problems diagnoised by then..
Can you put in gearboxes and clutches? or know someone in bunbury that can.. cheap... i really cant affford to pay $500 to get a new clutch put in if thats the problem.. i can buy the clutch but apparently its like 4 hours labour
Let me know!! damn i know i sound demanding but yeh hehe stressful times
Cheers for all your help peoples!!

oh just one other worry.. the first guy that tried to pull me out had a 4cyl rodeo or something... he used a chain and put it around my recovery point but he also put it around my sway bar... Hrm... it made a bit of a crunch a few times hope this wouldnt cause to much damage?
the guy in the cruiser that towed me home just put the snatch around the recovery point.. everything seemed to go fine like steering and suspension felt fine on the 50km tow home...
am i stressin 2 much?
ahaha

I bought another sierra and came with a gbox. Was not meant to get the box, just they were to lasy to get it out. Unsure on condition - and not sure how much they want for it. Looking about $400 for a gearbox usually. about $140 for clutch and the rest for install.
No i cant do boxes myself., done my clutch a couple times at a mates place on the hoist.
btw: chain can be ugly if someone uses it for a snatch tow. Tow is fine. Swaybar as well.
take the swaybar off anyway.
cheers

how can i check to see if the clutch has burnt out? everyone claims its the clutch, they say the smoke is a sure sign that the clutch has burnt out and the way its acting etc..
Also.. where can i buy a new one.. i have a mate that has can take my gearbox and clutch out and put a new one in... but looking at prices on clutches they vary a lot.. from $100 i saw one.. to $240 and then $350 for a "turbo" one..
What will i need? i do spend a lot of time offroad...and on beach etc
also i remember when this happened my handbrake was slightly on a bit.. wouldve this resulted in helping the clutch burn out?
ge tback to me
cheers fellas

no that'd just burn out the rear brakes a bit =)
only way clutch goes that fast is if you have ur foot half way down on it and rev the crap outa it....
or if it was out of adjustment for along time?

by Crawford
hrm i dont usually drive with my foot on the clutch so hrm... ;| :|
but it was the same feeling asif i was riding the clutch like the car was revving high without accelerating much.. then smoke came..
the clutch cable still works like it moves when the clutch goes in? Lol how do i tell if the clutch is actually burnt out or not?

looking at it after my exam on wednesday...
How come gearboxes are so expensive... Suziwest said $1050 for a 5speed or $650 if i take my old one in... :| that doesnt sound right does it?
im trying to find somewhere in perth/bunbury where i can get a cheap clutch.. ive got a mate that said he do it for me saturday morning...
Apparently my throwout and thrust bearings were loose when i last had it serviced so should ireplace those when im doing the clutch? if so how much are they and do they come in a clutch kit?
cheers
