Is it ok to weld steel wheels with a general purpose style rod in a stick welder?

Can't see why not. What sort of settings/adjustment do you have on your welder? With vertical down I don't see a problem, as long as it's prepped properly. You might have to progressively weld the sections to prevent warpage, depending on the thickness of the rim (the rim shape will add to the rigidity). Are they to street or trail? If trail only then weld away!

You sure you don't mean vertical up :?: :?: :?:

POS has almost convinced me not to weld the rims with a stick welder. He is probably right as they will see road use between home and trail.

I don't think it's that expensive per wheel to get them professionally done, especially if the rims will see road use. Heaps of companies are out there.

Humphey got his centres turned around so all the dish was outwards and it only cost about $45 a rim and that was to weld up the old valve hole and re-drill another on the outside.

If you were goin to do it yourself a mig would probly be better than stick.

Welding Steel wheels.

Use low hydrogen electrodes (E4816) if not using mig.

I have decided not to do the work myself but to get professional help. Thanks everyone for the info and thoughts though.
