MOG DIFFS ...... info required

i need info on them. i have a mate getting me some up north and he said they look to be too big. he said there is also no visible codes etc. assuming i can get any model what is the best and how can i explain it to him. 404 etc is not enough info. also i have seen a few sets on here for around 3k is that still the going rate, are they easily available. Just have to transport them from townsville and won't bother if they are available locally

u will b wanting to cut the front axle tubes n re-tube it
otherwise going to have all sorts of front shaft n pinion probs
and either way , it'll make any patrol sit quite high
since pinion to engine sump clearance etc etc
unless u wanna modify your chassis of course

forgot to add
check the rover section for more detailed info........maybe was measurements of width in there
otherwise few guys on here will have the measurements
just ask not in the nissan section
few guys in sydney have them , but obviously also up your way also , so a measurement cant b that hard to get

thanks fellas. excellent info.
mog diffs are mentioned so much here a search was getting me no where fast. killer axle has it all. i see the 404'a should be no wider than my nissan setup.
has anyone disk braked a set un aust and the $$$$

A mate has been working on a disk brake conversion for a couple of months, we should have em complete by mid week.
Not exact sure of final $$ yet. should know mid week also..
about 5 sets made & i think all are already commited to, ther is a view of making more if needed.

brake conversion sounds good.
Basically i just want to stockpile the diffs at this stage if i can get them cheap. mate is working servicing mogs up north. then once i have got the ute finished i can start to tinker casually on a buggy.

my 404's with 13.5" wide tyres on 17x9" beadlocked wheels come to about 2150mm wide overall. that is as skinny as i could get it with the 17" wheels. if you run 20"s you will be able to get it a lot narrower than that.

thats exactly the same as mine.
1730 centre of tyre to centre of tyre
2150 total width. 38.5 x16.5 on beadlocked 15"x10"s 4" backspace.
not alot narrower on streeet tyres as they are on the same rims and are 13.5 wide. but they are not on so i cant measure them.

no worries. they are not a bad way to go if you can get hold of a set in good nick. pretty strong apart from the portal boxes, which seem to be cast out of something resembling toenail clippings and silverfish. i think they are surprisingly light too, for what they are at least, i had mine tacked onto axle stands when i started working on them, and i could drag them around by myself without too much swearing.
you can still get your motor mounted quite low if you offset it to the right and butcher the sump.

he has none left. he had trouble selling them, then tony won woodpecker running them and everyone had to get there hands on a set..
try to get your hands on some 406's or 416's if you can, much, much nicer axles..

ok the stuff he can get is 2100 flange to flange. measured 1900 from centre of tyree to centre of tyre. all disk brake. seem to be newer than 85, so somehow i don't think they will be cheap
prob be too wide.

they may not be too wide, depending on what you want to do with your buggy. unless you want ro narrow them you will want to run 20"s otherwise it will be stupid wide.
ask your mate if the axle tubes bolt up to the centre. if they do they are U series axles and are pretty damn awesome. more suited to a general thrashing rig with 500hp and 50ish inch tyres than a little comp buggy though.

no worries. i will see him on saturday and get the full rundown. he kept saying they are massive, and look way too big. he has seen mog rover up close and is a mechanic so i am sure i will get detailed info.
on a side note his job is rebuilding army mogs. recons he replaced like 40k worth of parts that were all good last week just for maitence. so far all the used diffs have gone back for rebuilding. apparently in 2015 there will be a shite load of them offloaded. if the seen keeps going the way it is there might just be a 500hp 50ish inch class with u series axles

i have heard the 2015 rumour as well. it is supposedly all their stock of U1300's and U1700's. pretty funny when you consider a lot of the original supply of 404's to australia from the 70's are still running around..

I agree with Wendle, if they are that big they are probably U series. If you want to see some pictures of the U series axles and how big they are, have a look on pirate at the buggy buildup thread by Station (username).
Complete 404s are dirt cheap over here (a few hundred euros) - the hard part is disposing of the rest of the mog.

Was looking for some a couple of weeks back. There is none in WA and i was put onto a bloke in SA, he knew what i wanted them for("U want them for a rock buggy?") but he had sold out and did not know when he would have some more, may be early next year. He said he thinks they are starting to restore them and sending them to the middle east, so he wasnt sure on a price. I was after 2 fronts and he said some where between $3-5k each.

Yes and no, Junior (who owns the zook) is involved in the making, but the ones run at woodpecker are not the same as the ones in production. Those ones are the 1st set made and are not as well engineered or any where near as sexy looking as the new ones, but the new ones where not ready in time for woodpecker.
