4runner 4wd sys

DD a friend of mine has a 1990 v6 auto 4runner. As u may kno there is a solenoid on the front diff which engages 4wd wen the 4wd lever is moved into the appropriate posn. What I want to kno is what does the solenoid actually move/engage to give 4wd. This vehicle doesn't have freewheelin hubs so is the front diff turnin all the time or is some part of the solenoid function to disengage hubs as well?

Its like a fork that slides across and engages and for the hubs there locked in all the time thats why most peolple run manual hubs also a good idea so you can run any IFS centre

Engages wat. Planetary gears, axles, some sort of spline on the pinion?

Think it's an ADD (Automatic Differential Disconnect) system, which slides a sleeve via a vacume system over one axel to engage 4WD.
Yes the CV's, etc would be turning all the time.

Dug, there is NO vac line, only wires to a solenoid.

I'm not sure if it is the same setup as the Surf.Are you sure this is not the ADD indicator switch.The ADD actuator is just to the right (facing front of diff) of this and should have two vacuum lines.

If the solenoid on the passengers side of the diff centre, I would think this would work in the same mannor (using only a solenoid), with a fork sliding a sleeve over the axel.
I have a button an the side of my 4x4 stick (vaccume switch) to engage 4x4.

No switch on thissy, jus the stick (h2/h4/l4), if it works same as vac sys that means the axl is 2 piece Dug? Nifty, definitely wires not vac lines.

Your selector from 2H to 4H engages the solenoid to the front axel and transferr case.
From 4H to 4L the geering in the transferr box.
Yes axel on passengers side is 2 pieces.
I may be wrong but this is how I think it works (I'm sure someone will correct me
)

Actually Guys the front left axle (the long one) is two piece. When your vehicle is in two wheel drive the left axle is disconnected from the diff centre some there is no drive to the front end. Its just like lifting one wheel over a cross over and loosing traction from the lifted wheel. Its a pig of a set up and we think Toyota have rocks in their heads for comiing up with this idear, with this set up your CV's are constantly moving but not driving unless 4L is selected and what others forget is that your planetry gears in the diff are also constantly going as they are connected to the right side CV (short axle).I actually converted a 90 model 4 runner over to the LN61 system only yesterday for this reasons we are talking about.
