Just needed to know how to identify the difference between pre and post 10/84 gearboxes.

As I have the chev conversion, I'm not sure which g'box is in the car. It is an 81 model, but not sure if the previous owner swapped out a 4 speed for a 5 speed when the convo was done, or it is still the originial box.

Cheers,
Brighty.

I believe, but could be wrong, that the 5 speed was not introduced until after 1981.

Yep, but there is a difference between the pre 10/85 5 speeds and the post 10/85 ones... this is what I need to find out.

Thanks anyway. ;)

you can measure the idler shaft off the back of the transfer case, without removing any covers. But yes, i believe your dimensions are correct. Although, i think the 34mm idler shaft ran until 10/85 as opposed to 10/84.

This idler shaft is the one that is just above and to the right hand side of the transfer filler plug right??? (if you are looking at it from the back of the transfercase) If so, by my tape measure it's close enough to 34mm.... definitely not 38mm!!! = pre 10/85

Just double check'n fellas...

So I've got a 62 series, which is stamped 11/85 and its stamped "H55F I think"gearbox,,,,,....
I'm about to look at a spare gearbox, which is pretty close to my place... How can I tell if ist's the same as mine without removing my box, what external things can I compare it to?
Is this plug on the back of the transfer case relevant? Its 34mm....Image

that "plug" is the end of the idler shaft.

even if the one you look at is different, it will still bolt in.

Thanks dumbdunce.... So any 60 series 5 speed should bolt in?
Will there be issues with driveshaft, or anything like that?

vacume and manul shift transfer cases should be the only problem you might come across

The differences is in the transfer case isnt it? Not the gearbox itself? A whole 38mm idler transfer case could be swapped onto a pre 10/85 gearbox that originally had a 34mm idler?

all 5 speeds use the same flange bolt pattern AFAIK, should be ok. you might end up with a vacuum shift transfer as has already been stated, it's not rocket science to plumb it up.
