re-rego in QLD or have it done in NSW

Hi people!!

moved to NSW early this year and have to bring my 40 down from bris to get to around. however, it ran out of rego in may (i didn't re-rego because i had use of the company car for a while, but not any more)

As far as i know, it needs new tyres and mod plate for the bucket seats to get a safty cert. plus need serviced, wheel alignment and brakes checked b4 driving down to sydney.

question 1:
should i fly back to bris, get the rig registered in QLD? ie, fix up any problems and drive down? or have it trailered down by someone and fix it down here?

question 2:
if i have it registered under my dad's name in QLD, would i still be hastled to change to NSW rego? i plan to be in QLD every few months.

question 3:
what is the equivelent to a QLD mod plate in NSW? is it a more expensive and harder process in NSW? would like a new roll cage and bumper, just wondering if i should get it done there or here?

In regard to question 2: Ignoring the point about registering it in your name or your fathers (as this is an issue in itself) from reading through NSW legislation a vehicle can retain it's NSW rego and spend significant time interstate as long as it spends at least 48 continuous hours in NSW at least once every 90 days.

Whether or not the other state in question has issues from it's local legislation is unknown. I realise your situation is the opposite but it's food for thought. I have always wondered about those who live near a state borderline and work etc on the other side of it eg Gold Coast/Tweed. Do the QLD DOT have the ability to defect a NSW rego'd and engineered SPOA truck owned by someone who lives in NSW but drives it into queensland to work each day?

Mods seem to be easier to get legal in NSW than Qld.

On the other hand if you spend most of your time in NSW but think you can justify why you're driving your old man's car around, I don't think that the NSW DOT would ping you for mods on a vehicle registered interstate, so you might be able to slip through the net.

I personally would probably go for whichever one costs the least money for now, and if anytihng happens in the future (cops give you too much hassle and/or you decide to do mods that are only legal in NSW) then change it...
