HJ60 Valve Clearances

Going to check / adjust my valve clearances soon. I don't know whether they need doing or not, but I would like to know how to do them. One question I have is to get the #1 cylinder to TDC, I've read I need to turn the crank and there is a bolt on the end of the crank I can turn it with. What size is this bolt? Also it is at TDC when the rocker arms are loose? Correct?

Also I know I can only do half ( the FSM manual I d/l shows me which ones) then do I rotate the crank another 360 degrees and do the remaining?

Any other comments / tips would be appreciated. Thanks, Joel.
Intake 0.20 mm (0.008 in.)
Exhaust 0.36 mm (0.014 in.)

THIS should help u out .

1. Warm Up Engine
Allow engine to reach normal operating temperature

2. Remove cylinder head cover
3. Set No. 1 cylinder to TDC / compression
(a) Align the groove on the pulley with the timing pointer by turning the crankshaft clockwise with a wrench.

(b) Check that the rocker arms on the No. 1 cylinder are loose and rocker arms on the No. 6 cylinder are tight.

If not, turn the crankshaft one revolution (360°) and align the mark as above.
4. Adjust valve clearences
(a) Measure only those valves indicated by arrows.

Valve clearance (Hot):

Intake 0.20 mm (0.008 in.)
Exhaust 0.36 mm (0.014 in.)
Using a feeler gauge, measure the valve clearance between the valve stem and rocker arm. Loosen the lock nut and turn the adjusting screw to set the proper clearance. Hold the adjusting screw in position and tighten the lock nut.
Recheck the valve clearance. The feeler gauge should slide with a very slight drag.
(b) Turn the crankshaft one revolution (360°) and align the mark as above.
Adjust only the valves indicated by arrows.

Measure only those valves indicated by the arrows.

5. Install cylinder head cover

 Next question is how do I turn the crank?

socket on the front of it will do the trick. though it can be a bugger with the fan shroud/fan in the way something like a 30-32mm socket iirc

edit. the other 'dirty' way to do it is to pop the gear box in 4th or 5th, jack up a rear wheel and turn it, which wil turn the motor.

Yeah, realised the shroud and that would be a pain. Explain better about chucking it in 4th and moving the back wheels??

sometime a socket on the alt pulley will work . if not pull out the glow plugs to make it easyer . 4-5 gear is the quickest.
45mm socket fits the crank .

it is very common on 2H motors for the pads on the valve ends of the rocker arms to be worn through the case hardening, giving an incorrect reading when you try and check the clearance, and resulting in less than optimum valve lift and noisy operation. if your rockers are worn (if your engine has 150,000km + they will be), then you need to use a dial gauge to set the rocker clearance, but this is only a temporary measure as the rockers will continue to wear - they only solution is to have the rocker arms repairs by metal spraying ($) or to buy new arms from toyota ($$$$$).

Wowwwwwwww Look at me back in the day. Three years into a Plant Mechanic apprenticeship and Valve sets are sweet jobs :)

I don't know about factory crap. I checked my valve clearances again say six months ago and they weren't in that bad of shape. Not bad after 400 000kms

yea there not that bad i just finished rebuildin my 2h when inspected found the rockers were completly stuffed sorry about bagging toyota quality force of habbit workin for a company called F*#! they cant make a engine to last 30k compared to a 2h that will last 500k easily :2gunfire:
