Built for different conditions, don't need any wheel travel, and basically run 1-2 psi in the tyres and only marginal gearing. You would be stretching to even notice a "flat". Takes the whole "tread lightly" to a different level when you can lie on the ground and be run over by a wheel and live to talk about it. Very similar to what the Norwegians do.... (was in northern Europe a few yrs ago)
You don't need a spare as you are really not carrying any pressure in the tyres anyway.

DAMKIA you have seriously injured my national pride as an Icelander!
That Patrol was built in Iceland, where else!
The Norwegians are TRYING to do similar things to their four-wheelers as are done in Iceland. NOT vice versa! The Norwegians are severily hampered by very strict laws on vehicle modifications but doing their best within those laws.
Remember, that Formula Off-Road was invented in Iceland and the art of 4x4 modifications is probably further advanced there than anywhere else.
For example it´s close to thirty years since they started installing an extra gearbox, usually a Volvo four speed, between a four-wheelers tranny and it´s transfer case to lower the overall gearing. Later on an extra t-case.
BFGoodrich sent the first few examles of their 38.5" radials to Iceland for conclusive testing.
When an Arctic expedition on four wheels is being prepared, they have the vehicles built in Iceland.
And so on and so forth.
I´m not trying to put anyone else down, I just want to put things right.
Not because of any rivalry between Norway and Iceland! Oh nooo!.
You also claim that they don´t need that much wheel travel for the conditions up there. That is simply not true! When trucks are seriously modified in Iceland wheel travel is almost always one of the things that´s inceased. Of course you CAN get by in snow with less wheel travel than you probably need for rock crawling, but please: Don´t teach your grandmother to suck eggs!
If I ever build a 4x4 for rock crawling I might ask you for advice, but for driving in snow; the state of the art is still io be found in Iceland!
Respectfully, Ingthorsson.

Patrols, ´Cruisers and any other full size rigs on 40 and 44" tires are quite common in Iceland. To the best of my knowledge the 49ers have till now mostly been used on the biggest pickups, mainly Fords, and Econolines.
Check out the website of that Patrol:
www.xstream.is
and
http://www.4x4offroads.com/4x4-truck-pictures.html for some cool pictures of icelandic, and other, rigs. There you´ll also find part l of the buildup story on that Patrol.
I´ll be returning to Iceland in a few days and then I´ll definitely visit those guys at Xstream Travel. I´ll ask them about the suspension travel of the Patrol, ask them if it passes the oil barrel test!
Ingthorsson.
