Roll bars for my new tray...pics

So my tray is finally ready for roll bars, and I've got a couple of ideas in mind. The one that I like most is attached below and features a double roll bar, and the two other bars coming off that, much like Gut's bar.

I've been quoted around 6 hours work + materials for this from Dynamic Welding and Engineering out in Moonah, and they say it'll be around $500. They obviously can't give me an exact quote because they don't know how long it will take.

I was expecting this much, but do you guys think $500 is decent for a bar like that? I mean I dont have the skills to do it myself and since these guys are the only place that have said they can do it, I think it's my best bet.

So any suggestions to my design?

PS: All of those straight corners will be curved, I just couldnt be farked to draw them curved :)

That is pretty much exactly how I am doing my barwork on my Extracab Lux.
I think I too got inspiration from Guts bars.
Im not sure whether to put a bend in the brace bars that go to the back corners down near the bottom so you have more usable tray space under them.

if i was doin it id have the brace bars opposite to yours, straight up off the base of the tray then up to the bar, rather than out of the bar then down, if u get me... .... ill put some pics up of mine tonight if i get a chance..

as for cost, sounds about right, i paid 200 for what u have, minus the brace bars running to the back.. that was including pipe... which i think was about 60 bucks a 6 mtr length for medium wall(3.2mm?) 50mm stuff..

Oh righto I get what you mean, instead of having like:
.. _
../

just do

/

So more like guts then. Fair enough.

I take it you made yours yourself? Cos half of what I'm paying will be labour.

After looking at a few more designs I'm pretty keen on this one now. It's a bit more conservative and won't add as much weight as the X brace would.

If you're going to use it in comps then bends on the brace bars are not allowed. I heard that some of the comp cars for the Ateco were rejected at scrutineering because of bends on the brace bars.

is it for show or to save you and your b pillar in a roll. If its for show get a s/h ally polished one they are a dime a doz in that sorta shape. will be cheaper than buildind/buying a steel one.

It will not do anything as it is drawn in any loading.

side roll wil bend the tubes over, high sped roll bend them back etc

the x in 100% necessary to maintain the integrity of the hoop. it needs to be as long as possible meaning it must meet at the centre of the bends and reach to the corners of the tray at least.

the braces will serve no purpose other than get in the way of eskys, so if you intend in putting bends in them don't have them. To give you an idea the bends are so weak in 50x3.2mm tube i can bend them easily by placing one end in a tow ball hole and pulling on the other and i weigh 70kg.

so i would make straight ones that you can remove of have none. also mount them to the bend centres as to support the vertical supports of the hoop.

not to sound like a toss but - look at my members section for ideas

also if you can weld just buy a super cheap bender for $150 and a dawn die in the size you need for $90 and the tube is $70 a length x 2 so thats $380 and you keep the bender. i would bend it for you if you were in qld

cheers and good luck with ya beast

bru.

Hey thanks for the tips mate. I'm thinking that if I'm going to spend the money on the bar, I might as well make it useful in the highly unlikely event of a roll over. I mean I'd rather not spend $500 odd on a bar which is only for looks. I think you've made me seen the light :P I reckon I'll go the X brace, as well as keeping the brace bars straight from the top to the tray. I take it that is going to be the strongest way?

I'll check your members now.

I'm guessing the best design would be to have it just like guts' then?
Equivalent design on my rig :P:

mate that is just smashing!

remember too that the bracing from the tray to th chassis needs to be strong. i am assuming that your tray is 75x50x2 which is plenty strong enough to span 1ft. under your tray weld the same steel vertically with a nice plate and bolt to the chassis. i have never looke at a lux behind the cab but make it strong. then weld some corner braces to triangulate these legs lige let me try

/-------------------\
/ X \
/_________________\
___________________Tray
II / \ II
II/ \II Legs with trusses

also weld the braces to the edge or a support not to just the sheet unless it is backed by something. If you are not going to be driving fast you can make the braces shorter like half the tray and weld to the edges. this will give you more room and stilll be stronger than bent ones.

also are you going to buy the bender. just do it.

cheers mate

HAHA you get that living in tasmania...

Bar ideas look good... what sort of welding does it need? If you could bend it..

We have stick and mig welders but i duno if dad could be bothered welding it lol..

$500 is pretty cheap though.....

So I dropped my car off at Dynamic Welding And Engineering early friday morning. I talked to the bloke who was going to be making my bar and he showed me the roll bar he made for his hilux across the road. This made me feel a lot better because at least I knew this bloke knew what he was doing, and what the bar was for.

So I left my rig in their good hands.

I called up later that arvo and they said the bar isn't quite ready yet (which was expected) so I went down there anyway to see how it was going. They had the main roll bar done and the cross brace, as well as the second roll bar ready to go on. It looked the goods when I saw it so I couldn't wait to get it back on monday all finished.

Anyway so monday comes (now) and I called up to check how it was going, and they inform me it's all done, ready to pick up. So I'm about to head down there now to pick it up and take it home. I'll be sure to get some pics up tonight, so you can await a reply then.

Thanks everybody for the help.

Sorry guys can't find the god damn cable for the camera :@

I'll be sure to take more pics tomorrow after I've given it a coat of black, and post them up on my members when I find the cable.

Cheers.

It seems the second I posted that the cable suddenly appeared :)

SO check out the pics on my members thread. Cheers.
