is it necessary, wise, or just a waste of money to fit an upper cylinder lubrication system to a TB42 running straight LPG? any problems with loss of compression or valve seat recession?

many thanks

Brian

Put it this way, leaded used to be in petrol to lubricate things. Now it is no longer available, and hence no lubrication. Same as LPG. So if your car is unleaded then it is just fine for LPG. But yes, proper seats fitted to head are the way to go and the FlashLube can only be a good thing. The reason heads turn to shit is wrong mixture settings on LPG. But LPG is innocent as petrol will do the same too. Taxi operators were well known for trying to get even better economy by leaning the LPG too far.

Brian,

when i went in for the pink and blue slips on both my rigs, i got told that its definatly worth while doing it on the MQ... with the V8...

But with the GQ its a complete waste of time ( TB42 ) on gas....
the mechanic said not to bother, and i havent, and i dont have any dramas to speak of....

cheers

When I had my TB42E converted to straight LPG I was advised that an upper cylinder lubricant was not required.

If they wanted to, they could have stung me for a few extra bucks to fit one, and I would have paid. But they assured me it was unnecessary on this engine.

Best idea is to have the head done with Stainless Valve seats and stems as they handle the heat better than the standard ones put into the Petrol heads.

LPG is alot dryer and hotter burning fuel, so upgrading the stems and seats are a good idea, i have the flashlube installed on my patrol, even though i have the valve seats and stems replaced when my head cracked on me.

Um...i thought the TB42 was primarily from a Forklift...and as we all know Forklifts run LPG all the time. Thats was my reasoning for the ol TB's not needing upper cyclinder lube etc.

the TB42 is a Nissan engine, not a forklift engine :)

wouldn't think a 4.2L Straight 6 would be used in a Forklift

hmm I think you'll find there's plenty of forklifts getting around with TB42's on lpg/propane

Do a search for TB42 and you'll probably find more forklift sites than 4x4 ones. I did.
