You can change the bellhousing and the input shaft from the gearbox to one for a BJ70/BJ73. There are three shafts listed for the 3B compatible gearbox, 1980 - 10/85, 10/85 - 3/87 and 3/87-1990. I'm not sure if the differences are minor enough for one to be compatible with the others, but I'd get the one that matches the gearbox that you have now.

The helix on the layshaft has a different angle , Petrol to Diesel so the input shaft won't fit

i just conveterd my gearbox 3b to 2h/2f they are the same box. i was told the difference is in the input bearing and they changed in 85 to a different bearing on the input shaft. but it can can be done you have to change input shaft and nosecone which means full dissanbly of gearbox as its the third last thing out and third thing back in. all need is some suitable pullers to pull out the bearings. and the bellhousing is longer pm me for parts as i have them all hear
