From memory I thought it was on passengers side, back of the engine where the box bolts up. Few years since I have looked though???

just look all over the engine bay
for that metal plate
and there should be like a 12 (odd?) digit code.. your vin number...
your engine number will be inside the vin number..
Most cars i have seen they have all been on passenger side in engine bay

yeah prob is that the inspector guys have to visually see it on the engine before they will give me a safety cert. they said i may have to get qld transport to issue me a new number for it and have it stamped onto the engine but thats crap. surely its there somewhere.

Hi Mike
I'll be sticking my head under my bonnet later tonight, so I might have some news later.
Don't worry too much if you need a new engine number - I needed one in SA a few years ago, and it was all done over the phone - nobody wanted to see anything.
Edit:
I found an oil leak I didn't know I had, but no engine number. Attached is a blurry photo from my owner's manual - good luck!
Cheers,
Scott

yeh as that photo shows - drivers side right at the back of the block !
when i got my pajero last year had a lovely time finding that and the chassis number.
youll prob find oil and dirt and stuff on it .... really got to get your head in there with a torch !!

well the pad is there where the number normally goes but there is no number. apparently the police will issue me with a surrogate number and i then have to get that stamped into the block and can use that for the roadworthy. all i wanna do is hand it over to the buyer and get the money for it. does anyone have any suggestions at all for me??????
i am desparate.

Hey Red.. There is a flat machined pad at the front left of the engine block behind the left hand timing cover. Don't quote me but i think some were stamped there. It's also not a bad spot to re-stamp the number!!
Good Luck
