well after stripping down my engine then rading the engin number on it and it says its a L24 is this right, does this mean that it has been changed? or is this right?

well aswell as that. i need to get a new engine for it... so with out spending alot of money (i have probably $500 tops) what engine can i get and put it straight in, bolt it up, and drive away?

Get one with EFI if you can cause it will give u about 30hp extra over the carby L28.

but the thing is... is it a L24? or is it a L28... its regod with the engin number as L24--ect... the engine says L24--ect, but the compliance plate? on the drivers side at the front says L28---ect....

so what is it? and does anyone know the costs of getting it bored, new piston, rings, ect...?

If it says L24 then it's an L24.....

If it says L28 it's an L28.

Given that you want that extra 400cc you buy an L28. they're cheap enough.

mind you you may wish to consider keeping the L24's cam and dizzy..... they are good for extra horsepower.

L series motors cheap as piss to buy parts for. Good old Datsun motors use pretty similar parts so makes it cheap.

Note that L28 use completely different pistons and rings, crank and rods to L24. L26 use same pistons but different crank and rods.

All 3 are basically the same externally, but there's sump differences between the 4wd version and the 2wd skyline/280c/240k/260c engine.

Whoever did the swap must have used yout original L28 sump and oil pump.

If you really wanted to you could take your L24 out to 3 litres but the cost would be excessive when you can probably buy a good L28 for a few hundred bucks.


If you could stretch the $ a little further you could consider an RB series engine but sounds like you're on a tight budget so I'd just get an L28.

yep, im on tight budget... payed $1000 for the car knowing it had a problem, then $320 for a tow truck from traralgon to home (dromana) and started stripping it down. found all sorts of dodgey stuff then. it had been rebuilt, but not properly, all the tourque tensions were up shit, it was like a kid had put it all back together. one of the tensioners from the timing, had fallen down and blocked the oil pickup, the boars are worn, so the piston was getting slapped about, but all new pistons and rings, but old big end bearings, ect... so it was a cross between new and old. so now im going to look for a L28 for it....

There's so many nissan wreckers but you'd probably want something on the peninsula. Dont know anything closer to you than Frankston....

If there's likely to be other stuff on the car that's r00ted another option would be to buy an old L28 skyline for $500 and take bits off that. At least you could drive the thing to test the engine and a lot of parts are compatible. Stuff like PS and A/C are nice to haves and are rare on Patrols of that era but standard on most skylines.

If you think the rest of the body is good you can suss out getting a later RB30, RB20 EFI or RB20DET if the budget goes that far.

You'd probably find an EFI RB 30 Skyline that's bashed up in a prang for under $500.

if you're keeping the car a long while then spending a little extra to go EFI will be better for power, fuel economy, reliability and the ability to run on angles offroad.

I have an L28 sitting in the shed, came out of the wagon about 6 weeks ago, only has 158000 on it, But i'm on the other side of the country.

I have an L28 that could probably do with a freshen up as it has been sitting outside at Dad's for a while. Was running fine when I pulled it out for the V8 swap. Previous owner did a rebuild on the L28 and put a fair bit of work into the head apparently.

You can have it for free if you want, I'd be happy to get rid of it.
