Bad clunk noise in front diff

Hey guys got a really terrible noise from the front of my gq on the weekend while 4bing.
Wont make the noise on road, wont make it 4bing in 2 wheel drive, wont make it in low with hubs unlocked but only in low with hubs locked. seemed to happen when either just cruising down hill while engine braking or steadily powering uphill. its fitted with an air locker up front. the noise almost sounds like a cv cracking but usually when that happens the fun stops pretty quickly after that so that tends to lead me towards the diff centre. has anyone had a crown wheel losing a tooth and making this type of noise or is there a risk it could be a problem with the internals of the locker? Any advice would be handy cause i wanna pull the diff apart with some idea of what i should be looking at.....
Thanks
