Outer Limits 4x4 Board

Hey Everyone,

I have problem that I'm hoping you can help me with. Last weekend we took the 95XJ out to a 4WD Club fun day. It went well except for a loud and rapid knocking noise that only seemed to occur when in 4WD and accelerating hard (and possibly with the wheels turned but not sure). Given it has the OME 2" kit under it and still running standard (almost slick) tyres, do you have any idea what this might be? I have tried to get it to do the same thing on a hard road surface, but got nothing. I haven't had a chance to have a good look under it yet - just hoping for some pointers.

Where abouts was the noise comming from? front, rear?

COULD be something amiss in the T/case - but Bloody hard to diagnose over the net.
test it in the various t/case possies. Maybe try and identify front/rear/mid where the noise is coming from - get someone to walk/run next to you as you try to replecate.

Have a look at rear driveshaft uni - the noise is hard to trace, but you'll know by grabbing the driveshaft and seeing if it moves.

check your passenger side engine mount...

Thanks folks - all good pointers and gives me some where to start. Noise is coming from front - possibly left side.

Also inspect the axle unis.

Just to update you all on this - turns out this noise was caused by a combination of the suspension lift and a stuffed passenger side engine mount (got it in one Optical!) The suspension lift with transfer case drop tilted the engine back so that the front of the engine lifted slightly. Combine this with a stuffed passengers side engine mount and the tourque created when accelerating hard (worse when turning - probably because of the engine leaning from its own weight) and the fan moved to rub on one of the air conditioner lines.

FIX - replace engine mount (thanks to Dave at Wooders Garage for that one) and wack a decent size cable tie around the offending pipe to pull it just slightly out of the way. BINGO!!!
