80 series making oil

On the weekend whilst driving up the rock face in the gorge at Black Duck Valley, I found out what people mean by diesels running on their own oil. As I got on the steepest part of the face, it appears that oil got into cylinder 5 and 6, and the engine went to redline, and pumped ut masses of smoke. When I tried to turn the car off with the key it kept running, so I had to stall the engine to get it to stop.

After getting towed out of the gorge because the engine would not restart, we took out all the glow plugs and pumped the oil out of the combustion chamers then the car would start.

Anyway, I've taken 3 litres of oil out of the car already to get it bak down to the full line. I only changed oil two weeks ago, and maybe a little oil got held up in the motor, but not 3 litres.

Anyway, has anyone else had experience with an 80 series making oil. It looks to me as if the injector pump is pretty well isolated and It would appear odd that a leak would get to the sump, but Im only guessing. ANY IDEAS???????????

Just a guess but i would say leaking injector when the engine is turned off.

Sounds like your 80 was overfilled with oil. Had a similar thing happen to a 2.4l hilux diesel. Driving up a hill and engine when over red line. Had to stall engine to stop. Engine should of had about 5L of oil in it. When drained it had 8L of oil in it. :x Owner was not happy with servicer.

How many k's on the motor? Natural or turbo? Is there excessive blowby out of the rocker cover oil filler hole? Could be a leaking injector whilst the engine is running. When was the last time you had the injectors serviced? If the injectors can't spray the fuel correctly the flame front heats up the nozzle, annealling the spring and weakening the spring spring pressure, leading to dribbling injectors. But you would have to have covered a fews k's to fill up with 3L of extra fluid in the sump. Are you sure it wasn't overfilled, was the filter changed as well? If there is excessive blowby the oil can make it's way past the rings into the combustion chamber, also can find its way out the breather tube into the air cleaner or inlet mainifold (not quite sure on the setup on the 80's). This usually happens on angles and high vacuum situations (although it can be different on some motors)

Not a nice thought, but have you checked the coolant level in the radiator? Might be a cracked block or head........

No water in oil, 130k on clock, serviced very regularly, non turbo. I am starting to subscribe to the leaky injector Thanks Guys Ill get it checked out.

Yeah BJ the 80 can be expensive to repair at times, thats why I'm building up a lux to play hard in. The 80's locked and lifted etc so it goes pretty well, and I would rather keep playing in it. But I also want to start doing comps etc, and I use the 80 as a daily driver. At least with the lux I can play hard and trailer home without walking to work on Monday.

oil fed diesels are awesome my old diesel golf used to run on regularly when ever you hit 100km/h the power is awesome but the rattle of detonation makes you cringe. i ran a police roadblock on day cause i could not pull it up with the brakes. they chased me for about 2km with oil and smoke pouring out the exhaust. i was in a car chase and it never even got on TV. they were not impressed.

Pete when you say the pump is pretty well isolated it must still penetrate the block somehow . Im not familiar with your engine but the only time Ive heard of this happening is when a seal goes and leaks fuel into the block via the injector pump. Ive only seen it happen on earthmoving equipment where you have to check the oil every day and you notice the oil level going up a little each time and it s not uncommon . If it was a faulty injector it would have been blowing some seriously black smoke and running rough before it happened and its hard to imagine the injector pumping 3 litres of fuel without being noticed . Also if the oil had been overfilled by 3 litres you would have noticed it being pumped out long before the incident at black duck.
