What are the new nissan 4.5L petrols like? or is it 4.8?

What are they like on power and fuel economy?

Ive got a GQ and really need a engine transplant to get more power.

Would it be a better option to go the holden inj 308?

a mate did a 4.5. lots of work, prob more than a v8 in time and expense. if you do it get the whole motor, loom, ignition key, etc or its 1k for a new reprogrammed one.

what are your skills or $$ you plan to spend. you can't do much for under 6k.

cheers bru

bru your'e not talking about me are you.i did a 4.5 conversion in mine and depends what you are looking for.i went that way for reliability and since 4.5 are cheaper than gen 3 you can spend money on things like cam turbo etc.motor should cost you about 4-5 and need engine mounts ignition and computer and you should have no troubles just pm me if you need more info

pete, for what a new 4.8 is worth its probably gonna be better for you to get a VH41 or VH45. They usually come with the auto and can be picked up for about $1500 (my mate imports all things jap - if your keen pm me) These engines are strong units and would be a perfect swap. If ive still got the jeep and the engine poo's ill be seriously thinking about one of these if not a std stroker for the jeep

VH41-DE
Type: 4130cc EFI DOHC 32 valve V8
Power: 201kW @ 5600rpm
Torque: 376Nm @ 4000rpm
Gearboxes: RWD 4-Speed Auto
Source: 96-97 Cima 41LV and LX

VH45-DE
Type: 4494cc EFI DOHC 32 valve V8
Power: 208kW @ 6000rpm
Torque: 400Nm @ 4000rpm Gearboxes: RWD 4-Speed Auto
Source: 96-97 Infiniti Q45

Cheers Gary

Do they make adaptor kits for the patrol auto or would i have to chuck an infiniti gearbox in?

Im not 100% sure, but id say there is an adaptor kit out there somewhere, the belhousing on most nissans are the same if not similar i *believe* - but as the engines generally come with the auto id just utilise the VH box as its setup for that engine. im not really sure if the box is a smart one (ie own ecu or uses the std managements brain) - either way im sure you could fit a 5 speed in there - say the RB25 box (strong)

by not not
couple of months ago there was a GQ in 4wd monthly with a infinity v8 transplant and turbos Was done from some place in ACT if i remember

A bloke I know is fitting one to his shorty GQ. He is using the infinity auto (apparently identical or close to GQ), apparently mates to the transfer case with some slight mods, don't know anything about it myself just beers talk.

there are a few GQs on here with VH45, and also the V8 Yota Donk

two similar threads so im cut n pasting

VH41-DE
Type: 4130cc EFI DOHC 32 valve V8
Power: 201kW @ 5600rpm
Torque: 376Nm @ 4000rpm
Gearboxes: RWD 4-Speed Auto

VH45-DE
Type: 4494cc EFI DOHC 32 valve V8
Power: 208kW @ 6000rpm
Torque: 400Nm @ 4000rpm Gearboxes: RWD 4-Speed Auto

you will find the VH41s are more expensive generally cause most are newer and they also have a tendancy to be more of a revvier engine. If the VH45 is your choice look for a late model one as the early ones have an inherant timing chain issue.

How to tell the difference (besides being told)
old ones have an oval "V" badge on plenum
new ones have a nissan in oval badge on plenum

My importer mate can arrange adaptor plates for them or manual box (RB25, VG etc etc) usually go for about $500 and he just told me he sells the engine for $1800

do it pete, i might be able to twist my mates arm for some mates rates ;)

Greetings all, am new to OL forum. Is there a "Kit" available to fit these Nissan V8s to GQ's or are they custom jobbies. I've got a 95EFI duel fuel with 311,000k's on it so would be expecting to have to do some engine work soon and am keeping my options open.
Cheers

Id 'say' better then the GEN3 as their a smaller capacity engine with better breathing and design. But any V8 is gonna drink really esp when giving them curry

311k its just run in  . these are tough motors that can handle a caining for a long time. i would wack a turbo on it . it will give you heaps of grunt for not much more fuel and easy to install without big mods.

Thats good news, i'll stop waiting for it to break. What about the other bits, gearbox is a bit whiny when its cold. What are the motors good for?
