Gday fellas,
My names Andrew and im a 20yr old uni student in melbourne. I lost my license for a long while and am getting it back on the 2nd of november. I wana buy a sierra coz all my mates 4wd and I wana get into it. The sierra looks like the best option - cheap, reliable, easy to mod etc (or so ive read). So im after any tips, advice etc on what model to buy and what to look for when buying. Ill have about 6g all up and I want a lift, 31-32inch muds and a bar, radio, lights. Any advice/help appreciated. Also I have never driven one so what are they like to drive? Im going to join the vic suzuki club, are there any trips coming up?
Sorry about all the qs and long post!
Andy

Welcome to the relm of the zook.
$6000 you say......
Buy yourself a post 88 Soft top wide track. $3500 should get one in half decent nick
2in suspension lift if you are handy with the spanners $850 is about the going rate out there. Cheaper and more expensiive out there. You can use second hands shocks from a kingswood or Rancho the choice and dollars are yours
2in body lift is about $250 again if you can spin the spanners
Tyres $1000 for something like Simex MT 31/10.5/15 with new rims
Search around for a late 1.0lt transfer case and this will fix you gearing a little both on and offroad. Should be able to get one for $250
Welded rear diff $50 for oil and bits and piece's
That's about $5850 and should give you a fun car to learn in that won't let you lose your licence again.
The other $150 you can use to bribe mates with beer to lend you a hand.
HTH

Yeah I have a zook in the garage as well.
I haven't started a thread about it yet cause I am still collecting bits and piece's for it.
All of what I have mentioned is what I would do in your position if I wanted a play/daily driver. Mine will be more offroad focused and less daily driven.
Keep and eye out in the Trading Post and auctions sites like Pickles and Fowles have Sierra's quite often. The cheaper the buy the more mods you can do.

Mud driving gets real old real quick......Take it from experience I think all of us have learn't the hard way. I avoid mud and water at all cost these days. Only drive it if there is o way around it.
Replacing wheel bearing, starter motor, alternators and to top it off wet feet aint fun. But as I said you will have to learn the hard way.
With what I have listed in my first post you will have a very capable little car that goes everywhere the big boys go and then some......

I object!
upgrade the lights after you put a rock or somethin through em to semi sealed beams.
barwork can be made (check my site) or bought cheap enuff.... and not horribly essential, just nice.
i know i scare the hell outta a lot of cruisers and patrols, "embaressing" is the term i hear a lot.
a set of mud tyres is on the list... keep the a/ts for street.
the 2 " spring lift helped a lot with offroad, and a rockhopper would be nice.
they are really pretty capable out of the box once you learn how to drive em, don't mod to hard, learn to drive it first then work out what mods u really want.

On the club's yahoo group, there is a copy of latest newsletter and a draft of the next one. The files section is where you will find these, in word format. Also there is a calander section, which gives dates and rough info on trips. Links are on left of main page.. Spur of the moment trips, like when somebody is bored, wants to test a modification or whatever, do happen, keep eye on group messages for these.
I think 4wd show is next official trip, yawn, but there could be a day trip on same weekend. (SR20 zook testing new tyres)
Zook Club Cup Day is coming, this is usually heeps of fun, usually medium difficulty, depending on weather.
There is nearly always a spare seat with someone, if you want to come out on a trip.

You just did. Come to the meeting next week and either put your name down for a trip as a driver, or ask if anyone has a seat available and go "shotgun".
