I own a 1980 Hilux running a 308V8, im wondering what manual gear box would suit? im thinking of a marks heavy duty dyna box.
Also has anyone got some tips on suspension mods (what works, what doesnt). I was thinking of 4inch susp lift soft leavs, shackles, 35"tyres.
im new to this so if anyone has done a similar setup or the like id be rapt to hear.

The Marks box is the only box that will handle getting a hard time. I have a mate that has a fairly worked 308 in his lux and is running the stock 5spd but he is easy on it and has only had 1 failure in 2 years.
I am running a leyland 4.4 with the stock box and Dual transfers but have not yet driven it with the 4.4 so im not sure how i am going to go with this.
Springs are a hard call with the 308 as these are heavy. Just dont buy superlift or one of the expensive sets and expect them to work straight out of the box. They usually need modifying to get them to flex.

Thanx RUFF sounds like youve been there and done it a few times.
I might wait till the box goes 'bang' and get susp and tyres first. Just curious what susp setup does your mate (308) have?
and do you have pics anywhere of your beasts?

He is running some stiff springs not very flexy at all but he uses this rig mainly for work.
Here is a pic of mine as it sits now. Im still rebuilding it from a roll in November last year.

Ive heard Landcruiser Diffs would be the way to go for the 308.would i have to change the whole assembly? Is this worthwhile or is there more heavyduty? I want to get the lux nice!

Some cruiser Diffs are stonger but it will most likly be a lot easier and cheaper if you just buy a set of heavy duty CV's called LONGFIELDS!!!
The CV is the weakest point of the hilux axles!
The rear diffs are super strong and would handle the 308 with out to many dramas!

Landcruiser diffs are ok but the rear diff is offset so you need to move the fuel tank and run the tailshaft on an angle or you could wait till you update the gearbox then buy a cruiser 5spd adapter for a 308 and modify the tunnel to suit then you will have a strong box and transfer that is cheaper than the marks conversion and easy to find, and the tailshafts will line up better.

would the landcruizer 5 speed box be better to use or a patrol 5 speed box?

You will need to make some serious tunnel mods to fit this gearbox and transfer under the 'lux, and make a hefty tranny crossmember to hold the mass of this box!

IMO the Patrol box and transfer would look at the power from the 308 with folded arms and say 'what'.
Go the patrol box.
Here are some specs to ponder:
GQ gearbox FS5R50A
First - 4.556:1
Second - 2.625:1
Third - 1.519:1
Fourth - 1.000:1
Fifth - .0836:1
Reverse - 4.245:1
GQ transfer TX12A
High - 1.000:1
Low - 2.020:1
These combos fitted to the TD42 4.2L Diesel, TB42 4.2L Petrol

IMO i see that yes the marks dyna box conversion is a1 but the supra box is alot cheper or as ruff will tell u there is a hilux box that is the same strength as a supra box , but the only benifit i can see is that if u blow a supra box they are easy to get from jap wreckers and how can u go past the $400 price tag.
just my 2c worth
