Outer Limits 4x4 Board

Greetings,
On the weekend, I noticed that the water temp in my TD42 powered GQ wagon was just over half way after having to knock it down to 3rd and give it a hard time up some pretty steep hills a couple of times. I don't recall it ever being that hot before, so I'm wondering what 'normal' temp is for these things. It was a pretty hot day.....something in the order of 36 degrees I'm told. Through winter, the temp gauge hardly moved above 1/4, no matter what I did to it. The coolant level is fine and it hasn't leaked a drop since I replaced the water pump a few months ago. Belts are all correctly tightened etc, so it's not slipping. Wondering if something might be blocked??

yeah the weather could have something to do with it, 36 is getting quite warm..... you havent put any new spotties or nuthin infront of the radiator or something?

since I took the lights of the front of my rig it has being running cooler on the uphill hard slogs, think I will mount them out of the way when I put them back on and may pul the nissan badge off and cut the bar a bit to

Nope....it's exactly as it has been since I got it. It *does* have 3 Narva Ultima175 spotties on the bar, but they've been there the whole time.

To be perfectly honest, I really can't remember how hot it ran last time the weather was that warm, so it could be completely fine. I was just curious to know what temp others run at.

Mine runs anything up to 3/4 temp and thats in low 20 degree heat or even colder. Have contacted Nissan who say this is normal.

very ocasionally mine get's up to 3/4 temp up long hills or sitting on 120 kmh but comes back down quickly when you back off .
I will be getting the radiator flushed and the also the block also i always check the thermostat as i killed my last motor threw thermostat failure (and not watching gauge )

My GQ Wagon, TD42 only got to 3/4 on one long hill while towing my GQ SWB comp truck on the way back form the last comp, the freeway to and from is fairly hilly, i was actually surprised, the rest of the time i was doing 110km/h while towing on at high 20s degree day,

i find another 9 or so degrees means everything especially against a hot wind around high twenty never a prob but that just spring in qld

yeah there is a good chance it might, i will be towing to the next comp in 4 weeks, so it will be hotter by then, and alot more hills, so ill see how we go then, but i never had a problem before,

Normal up to the top mark before the top.
Range between the bottom and top mark is about 15c from memory.

The genuine manual I have here says all temps up to just under H is normal. So go figure..

I know your fear however I don't wanna cook this lovely little engine. After putting a Turbo on the side of it, it can get up to around the 3/4 mark on long hills... But then again the standard cooling system was designed for NA diesel not forced induction so a more efficient radiator wouldn't go astray...

They will run warmer on a hot day. Esp up hills..

Mine is turboed as well. 35s, 5" lift and 40mm body, bullbar etc. Getting a little warmer than I would like when working hars.

We will be doing over 8,000ks during the Chrissy break, possibly towing a trialer so expect it to be running pretty damn hot.

I don't want to remove my spotties etc so I think I will be upgrading the radiator to 3 core and redoing the fan shroud now that the bodylift has misaligned the fan and shroud.

My N/A diesel ran up to 3/4 on a 35+ day with aircon on and pulling a big covered trailer. Put in a 2003 I/C turbo motor and it ran at 3/4 all the time could not do 120km/hr on a 15 degree night.

Installed a PWR 50mm wider radiator - now its full noise on the beach with 35's working in 2nd gear and only just gets to 3/4 now and soon as I ease off it drops - great investment

Nissan do say that anything under the line is fine.
