Should I be wary of a TD42 with 400k+ on it? The owner says it's been regularly serviced and is his daily driver.
I've been searching a bit and full rebuilds aren't cheap...

Asking $7500, 1988 5 spd SWB Maverick. Overall the running gear seems OK, interior has a few cosmetic holes where things have been screwed on. Rear windows, as expected, are completely shot.

Might have to keep an eye out down south, I am finding very little up here that isn't way overpriced

Found that much of the time QLD is way more expensive.
If you're buying a stocker and can spare a weekend organise one down in sydney and drive it back.
For a well manitained TD42 400,000km is chciken feed... you should get 300,000km + more out of it.
Of course a badly maintained one is waiting to have a wheelbarrowload of money poured into it at any milage

Time isn't really a problem, I can basically wait indefinately for something to pop up.
Here is the vehicle in question

It does have some extra goodies on it
Considering the price, it wouldn't cost much to fix up the cosmetic stuff, I would just be concerned about wear (and the inevitable turbo that'd go on

)

That 4x4 has been advertised on few forums(prety sure incl. thios one)
I thought it's a good price but I didn't know about km.
If it was serviced regulary it could still be a good option

If correctly serviced with the right grade of oil, it should still be ok@400,000km's. I rebuilt mine at 550,000, and it would easily have gone much further. Some things to watch for on a high KM TD42: Noisy valve gear-can be caused by incorrect grade of oil, coolant leaks where front plate bolts to engine block, sticking injectors,noisy water pump. A rebuild using your own labour and genuine parts is around $6-7,000-after market about $4,000 depending on what needs work. If your that way inclined, its a fairly easy engine to re-build--uses replaceable cylinder liners..
