1995 2.8d hilux. Replaced all the belts and checked that p/steer pump mount bolts were ok, still squals - in the morning and especially under engine load. Wouldn't be anything other than belts eh? Pulleys seemed ok. What about fan clutch, do they squeal? Isn't overheating and doesn't sound like bearings?? Maybe I'm just not tensionming the power steer belt enough?
Any ideas?
Help appreciated

Hey Griff, my 60 series cruiser squeels under engine load and especially when i give it a bitta right foot, the noise sounds like a belt slipping. i checked belts, they are all good, i thought mayb the bearing in the idler aircon idler wheel was buggered but took the belt off and it still squeeled, took belts off one by one and still squeeled. I then stumbled upon a broken exhaust manifold stud up the front of the motor (no. 1 Cyl). When under engine load (mostly when turbo is spooling), the air rushing past the exhaust manifold was creating the same effect as when u get a leaf and blow on it, same sorta squeel/whistle, well that was my theory any way
. I will eventually get around to fixing it although the noise annoys the cr@p outta me!!!!!
Hope u find the squeel, its a pain when a new noise arrises.

Had a similiar problem with a hilux and found that where the bolts went through the power steer pump housing it's self the holes had worn oval over time and you could not get the pump to sit straight once you bolted it up, the tension on the steer belt always pulled it back out of alignment.

Could be alot of things but unfortunately the only way to find it is to drop each belt one by one, if its still there check the harmonic balancer.

seems to be the power steer (aftr removing ac and ps belt). Don't think its a manifold gasket leak - yet!......
has a new genuine belt, good tension, pump sits straight, pulley rotates freely - damn thing still squeaks! If it was bearings would smell and have collapsed ages ago?
comment appreciated.

We were out at Landcruiser Park on the weekend and my P/S belt started doing the same thing. Gave it a degrease and rinse and car lovers all good now. Must have been clogged with the bulldust i got burried in :(

Try pouring hot soapy water on your belts.

Have you checked the centre bearing on the tailshaft. Had 1 stuff up on a truck once and it sounded just like a belt squarking.

gee whiz...
how would you check the centre bearing - where did i put that workshop manual?..
will slip the ps belt off again this arvo just to double check it's a noise associated with the ps - didn't sleep well last night....
all replies appreciated - keep them coming

Even if your belts are tight & in good condition , a worn pulley can cause the belt to squeal

thinking it may be a pully problem - how do you check for wear. 1HZs have that rubber bush around the bottom pulley that can fail/collapse. But this is my 1st lux, and at this rate my last...
So, drove round with just drive belts on - chattering/squeal only very faint once or twice
put either ps or ac belt and it becomes slightly louder - slightly more often
all belts on get the full squeal
could it be crankshaft pulley. This is the harmonic balancer right?
maybe i've started imagining noises - drives me nuts!

The harmonic balancers do separate on these.
Pull all the belts and then see if you can turn/more the outer (grooved) part of the pulley...
