Hi All,
Quck question: I have a 1HDT powered BJ74, Is there any was of determining what year the engine was built? The motor was in the Middy when i got it and i do not know how old the engine is, I spoke to a spare parts bloke at my nearest Toyota dealership but he was unable to help me. I have been unable to contact the provious owner so any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks:
Marz

Hi All,
One more thing... Is there any serial numbers on the engine block that would indicate year of manufacture?
Once again thanks,

there should be an engine number on the block somewhere.
On a 2H its on the passengers side of engine close to the bellhousing, but as the 1hz/1hd have the inlet and exhaust swapped around it may be on the drivers side of the block

The year is printed on a label thats on the rocker cover, but looks like you dont have the label, I dont think youll be able to find out what year it is.

a toyota parts interpreter should be able to look it up for you. if you have the VIN of the vehicle the donor engine came from then it is easy, there's any number of websites out there that will help you find the 'year of manufacture' digit in the VIN and how to decode it.
1HD-T's are 1990 - early 1995 and not a lot of production changes - what do you need to know the exact date of manufacture for?

Hi all,
Re: Dumbdunce's question
I wound like to know the build date of the engine because i intend to change the valve stem seals on it. It's puffuing a bit of smoke after it's sat arround idling for a while then once i get going it stops. I'm hoping that will fix it and if not I'll get the turbo serviced....
Thenks,
Marz

the valve stems are all the same for all 1HZ and 1HD-T, pretty sure all the valve guide OD's are the same too, so should be the same seals for all.

Hi Dumbdunce
The young bloke i spoke to in toyota was either too lazy or did not know himself what valve stem seals are required. I'M guesing he must have been too lazy because when i was unable to give him the build date he said there's nothing he can do. Obviously cross checknig part numbers for the seals was too difficult for him. Once again thank you all.
Regards

that's pretty poor form from toyota's parts guy :(
SMS Diesel or Don Kyatt can sell you genuine or aftermarket parts, and will probably undersell toyota on the genuine parts.
cheers

pretty sure they are all the same. in the 1hdt engines.. the multivalve ones had different seals.
