Turbo Rocky Q's

I'm not sure how to search for this specifically, so i will just ask. I think i read once before, that rocky's have yota engines in them? or atleast some models? What engine does a F75 rocky have (84) model. I am asking in the view of oneday trying to hunt down a turbo ( i am probly dreaming but anyway  ). So on that note, would a turbo from something else fit? Like a one off a hilux?

i guess u have to find a turbo that matches the manifold however u might
be able to fab up an adaptor plate out of something or get n exhaust shop
to make one.

ive been told 2 dif. things about slappin a turbo on so i got no idea meself.

1: dont turbo a rocky cause seals or something is to weak...i call BS
2: its a diesel no worries slap one on !!

let us now how far u get with a turbo n increasing the fuel pump

a turbo puts more air into the engine so u run lean (i think)
so u increase the fuel to match the air-fuel ratio.

Why not source a turbo out of an F78 Rocky(~1993) ? .. they are stock 2.8 turbo diesel intercooled..

Thought of that, but rocky parts are pretty damn hard to get  , also thought of just getting the whole engine outta F78 if one was available.

The motor in your rocky should be a DL motor produced by diahatsu themselves.

The diff between a factory turbo charged diesel is the following. According to the genuine work shop manual I have R
1) turbo charger
2) piston carrier fitted & different top piston ring
3) Crankshaft has tufftriding ( hardened but first machining its gone)
4) Different valves ( harder material)
5) Oil cooler
6) Inlet & exhaust manifolds
7) Larger exhaust pipe diameter
8) Air cleaner box & hose.
9) the injector pump has a compenator mounted on it to give more fuel

Now that I have said all that
I fitted a non turbo crank into my turbo motor. The conrods & bearings are the same as non turbo. The only pistons you can buy after market are turbo ones. All non gen head gaskets list turbo & non turbos as the same. This is according to the engine parts place.
BUT CHECK IT OUT BEFORE SPENDING YOUR MONEY!!!!!!!!
Oil cooler has coolant from the motor as its cooling agent. Oil lines for the turbo come off the feed for the altenator air pump via another union on the oil pressure side , the return line can be a pipe welded into the side of the sump as it is only a return line. The exhaust on mine has a 30cm hotdog welded into a 2 3/4 in straight thru exhaust.
ps this exhaust is not loud as the turbo acts like a muffler

After a turbo is fitted get the motor turned for it by a expert approx $200
I know this because I fitted a later model turbo to my 85 rocky when I rebuilt the motor.
Hope this has answered your question
Regards Coffen

As it happens, my Rocky, when I first bought it, had an aftermarket turbo fitted by Mike Vine in Brisbane. I have since fitted a later turboed motor to my Rocky, so I have a Garrett turbo, with modified inlet and exhaust manifolds and associated water cooling piping and oil piping to suit a 2.8 diesel under the house, doing nothing. I know it does need a new wastegate acctuator, but apart from that, was working perfectly when removed from the vehicle.

It is obvious that the manifolds were modified to suit the application, as they are not the picture perfect type, such as in a ARB, or Safari type installation. But ya get that.

just buy a bigger/thicker/lower compression head gasket. that should stop all problems of strengthin the pistons. if you run higher boost you might consider valve springs too (with the new voalves youll need)

oh and flynn, your turbo is G H E Y, you need to buy a new one, but maybe you should get the blow-by fixed before that so you dont blow oil through another turbo. least the new radiator hose intake piping is giving you boost

You can see this setup has used modified inlet and exhaust manifolds. It takes coolant from the top of the thermo housing, and the thermostat has to be modified to allow continuous flow, and dumps it into the block drain plug in the rear of the block. Lubricant comes from the oil sender area, and returns through the filter housing.
It should also have an external oil cooler fitted.
The only thing that looks a bit crappy is the bodgied vibration dampner on the exhaust manifold. Also, I know the wastegate actuator is defective.
