Outer Limits 4x4 Board

Hi All,

I have a 91 LWB GQ on gas/pet with a 2inch susp lift and factory fibreglass flares. I have come into a little $$ and want to upgrade from the mixed bag of 31's I am running. The wagon is mostly a daily driver but when we go offroad it is on beach sand, gravel and a little mud (hopefully more with new tyres) Can you guys offer any answers to my questions below:

1. Will 33x12.5x10's rub if I fit them? If so should I got for 32x11.5 or 33x10's?

2. Assuming 33x12.5's are the go will my fuel consumption suffer much?

3. I have budget of $1,500 and would like tyres a bit more aggressive than AT's but not too noisy on the road. I have my sights set on BFG MT's or Pro comp MT's (I am leaning towards the Pro-comp MT's as they have a 5 for the price of 4 sale on at the moment) are these tyres too noisy?

4. Anyone got any suggestions on other tyres I may have missed that suit my demanding criteria?

You shouldnt have trouble with 33x12.5 size tyres. Have you considered googyear MTRs they are a excellent allround tyre.

Try BFG All terrains if you do mostly sand driving as the mud tyres will dig you to china when you hit the gas

The noise difference between A/T and M/T is huge.

A/T's are also superior on sand, gravel and road.

If you dont do much mud then you should really look at A/T's.

I dont do much mud anymore and am considering going back to A/T's for that reason (although the recent rain in brissy means there will be some mud to play in again). A few od the newer AT's like the BFG have wide spacings on the edge which makes them ok for less sticky mud.

MTR's should be on your list too.

i have tryed good year wranglers and got great life out of them and were a good rock tyre . not much good in mud though as they seem to clog quick ,now i have baja claws and are great mud or rock tyres (i found anyway) I find myself running rings around people on the beach with at's especially when you let the pressure down. We had a mate with at's drive my car on the beach and he has a gq as well and loved what the tyres did.
MTR'S ARE HORRIDLY NOISY THOUGH AND DRIVE ME CRAZY...... BUT AM TOO CHEAP TO CHANGE OVER BACK AND FORTH TO AT'S AND LAZY

I think Goodyear MTR`s are a Quiet tyre.
But don`t last very long at all.

My 2nd set of tyres are cooper STT and have more than 65k on them and
still have 5mm of rubber to go .

i was referring to most aggresive tyres. But thats the price you pay for better offroad capability

we used to drive rings round people with all sorts of 4wd tires on 4wds in a HT holden out Boat Harbour... All comes down to ability of the driver in the conditions.. Your probably more experienced in sand than others - you were probably the only one to let your tires down to start with...

How much would you pay for Goodyear MTR's v's Baja Claws? Aprox. (33x12.5x15)

I have old school coopers and i'll never buy them again... but you cant anyway..... but since I dont know anything about the new ones i'll keep my mouth shut.

All tyres in the wrong pressure for the conditions will perform poorly and have bad life.

So then are 33x11.5 about right for a 2" spring lift. This seem to be the general opinion going through the threads. By the way Smitty that little thing in your avatar? I would love to kick it`s goolies

I have 2" lift in mine and run285/75/16 (eg 33"x11.5").

Because I've got really soft springs and really long shocks it does rub a little. Not much but a little.

did you consider pro comp x terrains i run them as a summer tyre they are great onroad and really good as long as it does not get to muddie i have driven as far if not further than other cars in the mud with the xterrains i only come in to troublew when i go out with guys who run simex and i am to lazy to run the pedes

$260 each for 285/75 16's for good year mtr's and $330 EACH for baja's but a mate just bought brand new silverstone mtr's that look great for $1000. for 5 ,All i know about them is the silverstones work great offroad .
Don't know anymore about them .

Some people had issues with the early batch of the Silverstone 117 ET rip offs.

Grimace had problems in that there was about an inch difference in size over his set of 4.

Having said that, the older style MT117's (BFG look) dont seem to have this same issue.

Worth checking them out before they're fitted to make sure they're all the same size, but other than that the construction on the silverstones is really strong and they seem to have good wear rates.

From what you've told us I would go BFG AT's.

Mate i think the best tyre for you is the Cooper ST
It is a half mud half All terrain tyre, so would perform great in all round conditions.
Also Mickey thompson have got a great range of tyres, half all terrain half mud or aggresive mud and not so aggresive mud type tyres.
Give exclusive tyre distributors a call for your nearist stockist.
I have had both MTR's and BFG Muds and find both of them shit.
MTR too noisy, and wears very quickly also really shit in the mud but great over the rocks.
BFG kept slicing side walls, and shit grip in the clay mud.
