brake upgrade question

Hi
My GQ LWB now weighs around 2.5 with all the goodies and I am not too comfortable with the performance of the brakes (rear drums). I am contemplating an upgrade to TI brakes which are 4 piston calipers and bigger disks (complete diff swap plus master brake cylinder). I did a search and had a look at the bible, but I couldn’t find anything.
My questions are:
- Is there a significat difference in brake performance between the standard disc brakes and the TI
- Do 15x8 Toyota offset rims clear the calipers well enough
- Is there anything else I need to think of

Cheers
Joachim

You may want to replace the rear brakes first.

But to answer your question no you need 16" rim or very wide offsets to make it fit. But why, 4 point calipers are nice it whould be easier to replace the std rotors with a good set of aftermarket rotors such as DBA 4000 series No. 4329 SL , and 4329 SR.

I will be replacing my front rotors and pads next weekend with the DBA slotted rotors and some you beut pads, i also need good brakes because i tow 1200kgs everyday and with 35's it can get a bit hairy even with electric overrides. But in all honesty JBE put disks on the rear and get the rear bias adjusted correctly as dirtyGQ sugested as that wouldnt cost that much and at the very least you will be rid of the drums :D

i don't think they will as the slots aren't that deep

I've been running the slotted DBA rotors for 5 years now they work a treat fade dissappered and a quick dunk in the water didn't affect them as much. Paired with a good set of pads it's the cheapest option by far.

by not not
Also to compliment the slotted rotors you should change your rubber brake lines to the braided steel type as they do not expand under pressure so you dont have pressure lost at the calliper if all 6 are done you will see a diffrence

the DBA slotted disks are around around 210 but they also have a cheaper series at around 150 i think?

Your right 92mav the cheaper one's cost around the 150 mark the main difference is in the design of the internal web cooling have a look at DBA web site for details.

Braided brake lines are illegal on registered cars in NSW. Also insurance companies will cancel ur policy if fitted they find out about them being there. Stupid rule i know.

Thought this rule would have changed. I know it has in Vic. I was going to get them when I changed some stuff on the patrol. But was told by a some guys at a 4b shop that they put them on a GU wagon to fix a spongy brake problem. But it made no difference to the brake feel.
So I just fitted normal ones for half the price.

Braided brake lines make a massive difference, I ran them on my KTM dirt bike and they made a huge difference, but that was under race conditions not just everyday use, the feel might not be so obvious under foot, but start getting the car into heavy braking situations and I guarantee you will notice the diff, maybe not so neccessery in your average daily driver unless your throwing it around hard on the weekends.

my 2c worth anyway.

you can get lines that are ADR approved.we sell them and they are legal. all AU TE & TS50's late HSV's and BA GT & GT-p's use braided brake lines factory.

Thanks mate, I didnt know they changed the rules on this one. I used braided lines on my VL race car and the solid pedal was increadable. Once you touched ur brake pedal u had instant braking witout sponging.

well i replaced my front rotors with the dba slotted ones on sunday and the pads were replaced with the ENA green stuff 6000 series pad and what a differance.

now i have a very firm pedal and can feel the pads bite on the disk, the GQ now stops better than my wifes Honda! i am very very impressed with this package on 35's it is better than my old 2000 hilux with the bendix kevlar pads in it on 31s. :D
