What needs to be done to swap a yota slush box for a 5 speed? 88 model FJ62 with original slush box (motor is not standard and will need the bell housing changed).

Any ideas on approx time to complete and cost?

I assume you mean the auto box to the H55f 5 speed manual?

what motor is in it?

how much are you going to do yourself?

drive in/drive out I wouldn't expect much change from the $2500 ballpark, for a decent second hand H55F installed, plus or minus other things that need changing because of the engine conversion - bellhousings, crossmembers, tailshafts, holes in the floor, etc etc.

far cheaper and easier just to purchase the vehicle you actually want in the first place.

It has a GM 6.5l V8. Along with the dual lockers, winch, two sets of wheels (31"s and 33") rear storage, spare motor... well lets just say the price is right. Even if I got another complete vehicle, I still could not get all the goodies for the same sort of $$$.

Don't get me wrong, everything is in good condition (auto even has a low speed HD t/convertor and shift kit) and all is engineered. It is just that I have always been a manual type person (dead batteries and starters have been my luck over the years and a little hard to pushstart an auto) and will have to learn how to drive an auto off road.

I will give any mechanical work a go so long as I don't need specialised equipment to do it.

assuming the engine is in the right place:

bellhousing $500 (assuming the bellhousing on the auto cannot be adaptoed to the manual - I don't know), gearbox $400, clutch $500, pedal box, clutch hydraulics etc $200, budget $200 or so for bits and pieces, you will need a big trolley/transmission jack and the help of some friends to get the boxes in/out.

transferring the transfer from one gearbox to the other requires no special tools but its obviously easier to get a gearbox with transfer already fitted. you will need to look carefully at the overall gearing - even with 33's and stock gearing the 6.5 will rev way too high on the highway - you will need to step up to 35's or invest in overdrive transfer gears or taller diff gears.

it will be a mission but it won't be really difficult, just time consuming. take a week's holidays to do the job and don't be disappointed if there is still a lot of finishing off to do after that time is up!

There are h55f 5 speeds going on eBay for about that price.
