I took the 60 to the local air con place as last summer it stopped working. $990 to replace the leaking compressor
. Apparently the compressor on it's owns costs $600. Anybody had this done before? Anybody know if the compressor can be rebuilt? I didn't ask as I was in shock at the price.

i replaced the seal & bearingin my compressor and the cost me about $40 for parts & fitted it myself.I think most a/c shops don't do this as they make more money outa selling you a compressor.

compressor from a wrecker will cost you $50 - $100 with some warranty, it is easy to install yourself if the system is already depressurised, and a regas + conversion to R134a + new receiver drier is around $250.

I can get a compressor from a wrecker for $150 with a 6 month warranty. The system is running the new type of gas, but I'm guessing that is to do with the compressor itself. If the new compressor is $600, why does it cost $390 to install? I don't think the compressor that I have is very old. I recall the previous owner telling me that he had it redone and that's why it has the new style gas.

gas, drier and vacuum/charging is about $200, if the compressor takes 2 hours to install (unlikely, but possible) then 2 hours @$95/hour takes care of the rest. a lot of shops are charging rates aroun d the $100/hr mark these days.

OK - fair enough. Can the compressor be rebuilt though?

your existing one? who knows, but it will be more expensive than $100 for one from a wrecker, so just get another one.

Should be. I was told of a A/C shop that does changeover compressors for around $150-$200

I think that is turbo4t off this board - and that compressor already has the R134A nipples on it, so yes, it's exactly what you want. assuming it works.
