The Patrol wont start when the ignition key is turned on. Heaps in battery and even when jumped from the dual battery still only sound heard is a click click click sound from under the cover beside the batter and the guard. Isolated it to a green relay (one of 2 beside each other) managed to start it by using a pair of multigrips to short between the big positive lead going to starter and the other terminal. It started fine for 3 or 4 times then did the same thing again last night. Started it again the same way. The relay thats clicking could that be the problem or just a sympton, or is it in the ignition somewhere elese. Starter appears to be fine as it starts when shorted out but not when using the ignition. Any help on this appreciated as its intermittent and will work for sure if taken to an autoelec.

Pull the small wire off the statrer solenoid. Place a correctly hooked up test lamp into it and get someone to try and start it. If the test lamp lights up then the wiring from your ignition switch is ok & the stater is faulty. If the test lamp does not light up then the wiring is faulty. Repeat this process with all sections of the wiring loom towards the ignition switch until you find the fault.

Do any of the lights (inerior or dash) Dim when you try to start the car???

Another way is grab a 20cent peice and short out the two pins on the back of the starter moter and see if it turns over if it does then you may have a solinoid.

The click click click noise is normally created by voltage drop. when the car try to turn over it draws a huge amount of current, Making the voltage drop below a point that the solinoid wont operate. when that happens the solinoid turns off then the current drops, the voltage increases bringing in the solinoid and so on and so on which is the click click click.

Good luck.

Test the voltage as said to your soliniod , at the thin wire ,
if theres non there when you are trying to turn it over then your sol is cuctus . Typical prob coming on to summer shows up first week of reasnable hot weather ;)
Ive done Two on friends cars in the last week .

The problem hasn't reoccurred again so cant test out any of the above theories. Appreciate everyones ideas will let you know how it turns out 'when' it happens again.
