Outer Limits 4x4 Board

It seems the front of my GQ is lower than the rear and it gives me the shits caus i dont think it looks as good, its only just noticable about 15mm maybe a lil more but i think my car would look 10 times better if level, what do pleople think of those coil spacers you can use to lift your car a lil? Any opinoions would be greatly appreciated. Of course this is only an option if there is enough travel for the shock.

If it only 15mm then coil spacers are cheaper then coils.

I used about 15mm spacers in the rear of my 4Runner just to get a little more clearance for the longer shocks. I know 15mm is bugger all, none the less i've had no dramas since fitting. I also noted that Snake were the cheapest out the big mobs back then, by far.....

I prefer a 10mm rake back to front. So when I load up the back it levels out.

you should have it raking from back to front, it will drive heaps better this way.Leave it as it is.

failing that ARB sell trim packers in 5 and 10mm thicknesses for adjusting the height by small amounts (up to 15mm)

that is the actual reason for it, in ome suspesion it is recomended that it is done for load carrying purpose

I dont really go touring very much so when i go i doubt if whati take with me would affect it that much, i do much more driving artound town. Doesnt it say on that spec page that from standard its even both ends??

It takes a lot of thought sometimes to sell springs that are going to sit level. There are so many variables. Winch, bull bar, dual batteries, turbo, heavier engine, heavier driver, passenger, car full of people, fridge, drawers, extra fuel, gas tank, bigger tyres sitting on the back, rear seats in or out of the 4wd and often your chassis will be twisted and maybe panhards aren't set right or your trailing arms not adjusted so your springs are sitting square so they bend and sag.

You then have 4wd's setup with softer suspension than usual so it is more likey to sag. You want it soft enough to flex well while being able to carry reasonable load without sagging. Then you have the opinion of the person buying them on what kind of ride he or she is after. Their opinion is often based on previous purchases and who knows what they were sold previously. Each manufacturer of coils have light duty, normal duty, heavy duty, extra heavy duty and extra extra heavy duty coils.

So it is hard to blame the spring or the person who sold them or anyone because there are so many variables.

I know it is a pain that it doesn't sit level and you have probably paid a fortune for these things but you could get another set and compensate buy getting a heavier front coil and find you are sitting up at the front and as others have said it is better to sit up in the rear then the front.

Sorry about the long winded post, anyway what I am getting at is put the coil spacers in and try to be happy with it.

Of course if you want new coils, I will be waiting with open arms

does that have any affect on the wear of the tyres??

cheers 4wd stuff, im more than happy with long winded posts that what im after!! Yea im gonna put the spaers in the front and i think ill be happy then. I stil lthink my coils arent as high as they say though, so i wouldnt mind finding that out. I think ill take it in to a king sprind dealer they should have set hights to go off i would have imagined. Cheers for your help guys.

well one more question, for the people that think i should put the spacers in should i go 15mm or 30mm??

It is quite common for coils to lean to the drivers side so I think you should measure all 4 corners when you are on the flat and see if you need a 30mm on the drivers side and maybe 15mm on the passenger side. On a GQ you have the weight of the driver, battery and spare wheel all on the right hand side. Usually but not always we get the drivers side coils made longer than the passenger side to compensate for this.
Surely some measurements are written on this Forum somewhere.

cheers 4wd stuff, ive been looking but i just got a reply to my email i sent to king springs, they say 715mm on the rear and 700 on the front so i guess all is well and im measuring a lil over that but im not really doing it accurately.

no idea their off, and rotated (well thrown on in any spot) almost weekly, and the cruiser gets driven too and from wheeling only pretty much.

so you can be heartbroken when a stray rock or tree takes out a panel. or so you have issues with hacking into it to clear those bigger tires? i personally think a good looking rig is one that looks well used, and looks well set up (i.e. 33's on a stock height zook ). not one that has all 4 corners mm perfect in height.

i have 30mm coil spacers on my 80 series front and rear with a 2 inch lift i love em.

nah i don't even wash it (i know that's slack) because it gets driven too and from wheeling, and quite frankly, i'd be spending longer washing it each week than driving it... just to get it muddy the next weekend. guess i just got to the point where i realise that if i'm going to wheel it and enjoy it, i'm going to be this thing's last owner. and besides, mine has a feral look to it that i love. dented, chopped up, leaning to one side. it's battered, but i'll still jump in her tomorrow and drive to melbourne. i understand wanting your car to look good, but it's a matter of funtion over style when it comes to 4bies in my mind.

the lean, well i don't necissarily want it, i know what causes it. haven't had the time or motervation to fix it, as it'll involve either new spring plates, perches and springs, or removing my gas tank and putting a new main leaf in it. can't justify either. by all means, space your coils, i just agree with the other guys here, the rake is probably so it sits level with some kit in the back. mmm functionality.
