Hi all...Has anyone used the PWR water-air barrel intercooler?.Or can tell me if they are any good?...Ive got a 79 series with a 1HZ with an MTQ turbo fitted...It needs to be intercooled,and ive decided water to air is the best method IMHO,and i want to do it without spending a fortune.

What do you call a fortune? I would have thought the PWR intercooler would be $1500+? Any idea what it actually costs?

Barrel only is from $396 (4"x6") to $1366 (8"x10")

Volvo marine engines use them and are worth bugger all to pick up 2nd hand also Cat use them on their machines. They are a very efficient means of cooling but you need a superate cooling system for them.

I looked at the PWR but in the end picked up a Subaru Water-Air intercooler from an early Liberty RS. Total cost was $650 + fitting.

Issues I had were:
1. Pump bearings were shot so pump was very very noisy. Looked at repairing it but then just bought a Davies-Craig booster pump (part #9001) instead. This is magnetically coupled so you don't end up with water in your bearings.
2. Standard radiator connections were a little odd which made piping a bit tricky. I had one of the ports turned around to make life easier. Also you will need to be able to weld to make some brackets to mount the radiator.

If I were doing it all again I would probably just buy the intercooler core for around $350 and source another small radiator from a wrecker (motorcycle or maybe a heater core) with more suitable connections.

On the other hand, the intercooler does work even with no pump running at all, just water in the core, temps dropped 20C across the core. I will post up a more detailed thread in a few weeks once I have the last few bugs worked out.

Any idea where to pick these PWR intercoolers up for bugger all second hand?

u might find a 2nd hand one on a forum somehwere but not for bugger all, u want to get one cheap buy a water to air ic from a import wreckers
