Has anybody put a 4bd1 into their Disco? I know plenty have done so to their Rangies.
What are the pitfalls?
Advice will be much appreciated.
thanks

Weight is one issue but overall i cant see why not, if you can legally fit a chev V8 diesel into a landlooser then you should be able to get it certified. The strength of the drivetrain will be another issue, would you be going auto or manual ? JustinC on this forum has made an isuzu to ZF adapter which would help you out.

yeh, I thought weight would be a worry. The trans is manual and yep I didn't think it would handle it. I was asking on behalf of a friend. There is a cheapish 4bd1 for sale around here. $2500 I believe.
Anyways, the aforesaid friend went and bought a 200tdi disco on the weekend. It's kinda rusty but the motor seems fine.
How hard is it too bin the v8 for the tdi?
cheers

Apart from welding the Tdi engine mounts onto the chassis instead of the V8 ones, everything should be a bolt-in swap.
The v8 and Tdi boxes have different ratios for the forward gears, and a different high range ratio. If the v8 is new enough to have an R380 fitted (1994 or later) I would track down a tdi R380 bellhousing and use that though, they are a stronger box.

Is the V8 disco Auto or manual? And is the TDI Auto or Manual?

Australia didn't get auto diesels until the 300TDi, so if it is a 200TDi it must be a manual (LT77S).

thanks guys,
both discos are 93 models and both are manuals. I guess it would have been better for the v8 to have been an auto. But having said that the rusty 200tdi comes as a complete car. Should we swap both the motor and the gearbox?
Trouble is of course, that old mate has just had the gearbox in the v8 overhauled.
Would the gearbox ratios be all out of wack for the tdi? ie wouldn't pull the skin off a rice custard etc.

Both have the LT77S then. Ratios are here:
http://www.expeditionlandrover.info/gear_ratio.htm
As you can see there is a bit of difference, but not a huge amount. It could be enough to mean the Tdi isn't very nice to drive and may not want to pull 5th. It will also mean low range is 39:1 instead of 43:1.
Also the T-case ratio may be different (not sure) - if it is the Tdi would be 1.4:1 and the V8 1.2:1.
Best thing to do is to check the tdi LT77 over, especially if you can drive it now, and check how much backlash is in the mainshaft/t-case input area - this will give an indication of the overall box condition.

yeh, thanks for the info Ben. I was talkin to old mate a little earlier and it seems , that it's a Landrover thing
He's gonna keep them both
The v8 for towing and the tdi for economy.
My welding instructor has always told me that.....if it was metal before it can be metal again.
cheers
