GQ + 4.5 Petrol
GQ + 4.5 Petrol
Yes, I've done the search thing!!
I've decided to explore another option in relation to engine swaps. While a V8 would be sweet (I was thinking VN-VT with a stroker crank out to 383), but in the end I think it would be too expensive.
How much drama would it be to fit a GU 4.5 litre petrol? While a 4.8 would be great, I'd think the demand on these engines would make them an expensive option. Which brings me back to the 4.5.
How much do these engines (including computers etc.) run to approximately? Do mounts match up? Does gearbox mate up?
Any assistance greatly appreciated.
Regards

Ok, so I've been looking at this engine stuff for the past few days, and have had it in the back of my head for about 12 months now.
My original plan was to wait for the TD42 to die, and to replace it with an import TD42T- Cost -$7500 for the motor, and as it just falls in, no other expenses.
Then I thought, that if I want to compete in more serious stuff than the Tough Tracks Challenge, particularly timed events, I'd have to spend more $$ on the TD42T to at least make it close to competitive. More $$
Then I fell in love with the roar of a V8 and thought that'd be the go. $1500-2000 for a GM 5 litre out of Commo', and maybe a stroker crank and rods (more torque down low me thinks) add $1300. Then I look at the Mark's 4wd Adaptors site, and it looks like the stuff to do the swap will cost about $2000 at least.
Then me thinks, back to practicality, what about the 4.5 petrol. There must be legion of these things in wreckers by now and would be about $2000, you can get a tojo 4.5P for that. (Yes I know, older, more of them etc.) Quotes from $3850 (no 'leccy bits) to nearly $5000 for one with it all. 4.8 would be great.....$6600.
Toyed with the idea of VH45 or Tojo V8, but adapting them + having to switching to auto (more $$)
Getting confused (and depressed
) Of course I'll offset the price of the whole deal by selling the TD42 for (hopefully) $2500-3000.
HELP ME!!!!!

There is a fella up coast with one in his GQ and I am in the process of putting one in my ex diesel GQ ute.
If ya want to come around and check it out I will be here (at work) on friday working on it.
It is not a drop in fit but me thinks probably easier up to the point I am at than a v8. And it stays nissan and the motor is designed for a 4wd and therefore should be more suited.
There are different ways of doing it too. I am going to run aftermarket computer but James up the coast has done his with all the factory gear.
Let me know if you want to come around and check it out.
My motor and box with everything included cost me about 3500 came with extractors too. I am using a gq gearbox so just keep yours when you rip the motor out.
Cheers

I don't know that the 4.5 petrol is that much better than the 4.2 to justify the effort. I mean, the TB45 is just a TB42 with an extra 3.5mm of bore, for a frankly pretty pathetic 20kW gain.
On the other hand the 4.8 is much improved over both the earlier motors with 24 valves, variable valve timing etc - but overall does anyone really rave about any of the TB series motors? I'd keep one if I had one, but I wouldn't go out of my way to swap one in.
I would still go for the V8. When I was looking at a ford V8, I got this from Dellow Auto:
Dear Jason,
Thankyou for your inquiry. Please find below a list of parts and prices to install a Ford V8 289-302-351 into your Ford Maverick.
Kit includes:
Bellhousing
Pilot bush
Clutch plate
Engine mount brackets & rubbers $950
Note: If you're planning to use a late model Ford V8 302 injected enigne, we are designing a kit which will be finished in approx. 2 months.
Obviously there woud be a bit of other stuff required, especially on the auto electrical side of things, but a lot of that you can nut out yourself.
Anyway. I suspect your costs would be similar for the V8 (ford or holden) to what they would be for the 4.5 litre.
Dunno. Let us know what you decide though...
