hilux flex

Post by MEE-81G »

hi iwas just wondering how i can get my 89 dual cab lux to flex a bit better. it has a 2in spring lift tough dog gas shocks and snake racing extended shackles. the front springs are fairly flat now coz of the shackles and i get ok flex in the front but want more. and have fark all in the back, any suggestions will be appreciated, p.s. dropped hangers coming soon. will these help flex, im guessing not

cheers, adam

unles you get longer shocks all the other bits are useless. remove the bolt from the u bkt on rear leaf if you have two stage springs, this will help as the second stage works in extension as well as compresion

Longer springs and your shackle angle is the key, you dont want to go over the top though because hilux's are already unstable from factory and you dont want to make that much worse than it is.

Front:
Dropped hangers definately help with flex dude,
but you will need to modify your steering:-
Do a search on "Cross over steer conversion" (search)
And you will definately need longer shocks after you drop the hangers,
so you may aswell build some extended "Shock Hoops" (search),
You will need to get "Extended Brake Lines" (search) and most
likely an "extended front drive-shaft" (search).

Back:
As Gribs said, you really need to work with the rear setup to acheive
the right spring length and shackle angle. I am still trying to get this
right on my 89 single cab, but for now it will do.
You can also remove leaves out the pack which will make it softer, but then you need to worry about getting a "track bar" (search) to stop the diff twisting due to the force it needs to exert on the wheels in low-range 4wd type situations.

Theres heaps of other things you can do and variations on this setup,
but these are the steps I followed when I did my upgrade.
I hope that makes sense,

the photos below are of my rig about 1 year ago on its test run after
first fitting the dropped hangers, extended shackles, my first ranchos cross over steer and extended front driveshaft. The back had only had
the clips cut off and I think 1 leaf removed from memory.

I got an 89 dual cab too, the back of my shocks are that shape / \ , other than that it has the same mods as yours except I got ranchos. Seems to do the job for me

Yeah this did the job for about 3-4 months, then I got greedy
and wanted more flex.

So I swapped the rears into the front pack, and got new rear leaves
and extended shackles in the rear too.
The back is alright, but still could be softer, but not without a track bar
so that will have to wait for now, I would like to get longer leaves in the
back so the shackle angle is more like on DropBears rig it " / " would be better. Still trying to work out wether my main leaf is shorter than a
hilux IFS leaf or not. But this will be the next suspension mod after I
get the front sorted 100% (the brake lines pulled tight in this pic, and we
reckon there is at least another inch or so of down travel

These photos were taken out on my last trip out with China off the board
up at the watagans about 1 month ago

thanks for all the tips guys, i have removed the bolt from the spring pack holder things all round, and have the correct shocks for my flex front has good flex, (want better though), and back i will be doing the / \ shock setup soon, but habgers first, and im guessin the shackle angle depends on the spring length? because up back my shackle is almost vertical straight

Or go into Big Balls Offroad and/or Overkill Engineering ask them how much it would cost to do the necessary mods to give you more flex.

I've got some close up pics of mine if you want them emailed, takes too dam long to load pics up on here. PM your email if you want them sent to you.
