Outer Limits 4x4 Board

My gearbox has just developed a serious oil leak. It used to only weap out of the transfer case at the end of the idler shaft. Before going on a 3 week outback trip, I installed the bypass hose kit between the g/box and transfer filler plugs. When I came back from the trip, pouring out from the top of the gearbox somewhere. I have cleaned it down but can't see where it is coming from. Any ideas? I'm thinking of removing the bypass kit and seeing if that makes a difference.

our gearbox had this problem about 10 years ago and it was fixed by toyota, The oil is actually coming from the top of the box where the selector box attaches as far as i know.

if its the same thing the bx will have to come out. I dont think its hard to fix other than the fact that you have to drop the box out.

If you do have to take the box out its a good opportunity to check your clutch rear main etc etc.

I am thinking the bypass hose kit has now raised the oil level in the transfer to a higher point where another leak develops. Like Shadow said, the High-Low selector shaft seal is a candidate for a leak. Another site is the transfer breather over the input shaft. It can't be sealed as it is supposed to let out any pressure from within the transfer.

Two options. The temporary fix is to try putting a hose extension on the breather and put the tip higher than the gearbox shifter plate. Remove the spring loaded cap (it twists off with your fingers) and attach a hose and clamp. A bit tricky as the stub remaining is only about 1 cm long.

The permanent fix is to get rid of the bypass hose and replace the seal between the transfer and the gearbox. Which means you may as well as replace all the seals in the transfer or even rebuild it as you will be opening the case up.

I think I'm putting off the inevidable and you guys have just confirmed it. It's time for a full g/box and transfer rebuild. I will have another closer look and try to see where the leak is, especially around the breather tube as suggested, but the correct thing to do is pull the whole lot apart.
