Outer Limits 4x4 Board

Hey guys,

Just got myself a 93 2.8 Turbo Diesel F78 Rocky. I'm so happy with it!!

Took the air filter element out yesterday and saw a plastic object around one end of the filter (Closest to turbo) where the cold air intake comes into the airbox. It sleeves around the filter leaving a small gap between it and the element. Its a normal paper filter. The end of the plastic 'thingy' has fins all the way around which looks like it circulates the air flow around in the housing. Sorta hyclone-ish technology.
I'm wondering if this is a stock item, or aftermarket.
I just think its blocking half of the element, and the air has to travel further in the airbox until it reaches the filter.

They come with any standard paper filter I have bought for my rocky (usually from repco), wouldn't have a clue as to what it does though .

But sorta in-line whith what you said, would removing it increase the airflow to the engine??? and does increased airflow mean better fuel cons? (yes, i am a fuel miser and every little cent i save is one less the fat arab oil barrons have )

They are standard on the elements. They do come off, by unclipping them from the bottom. I would not remove it though, as then any rubbish, mud, dust, insects, ect, ingested into the intake smacks the paper filter in one spot. Eventually, in my mind, this will cause a weak spot in the filter. The vanes make the air swirl. If you look in the lid of the air cleaner, there is a gap at the top of the inner lid. This allows large contaminates to get trapped between inner and outer lids. Also at the bottom of the lid is a one way flap, which allows any water to exit the can.
Regarding air cleaner elements, there is a model Hi Lux element, which is exactly the same measurements, bar the length, one mm shorter. Cost is about 1/2 the Daihatsu one. Only mod needed is removing the rubber seal from old genuine element, and glueing this to the inside of the air cleaner can around the outlet to the motor. The Hilux ones dont have the seal on them.

that plastic bit on the lower half of the airfilter is there to get the air spinning to help your rocky get more air into it. It also helps with makeing the air filter work over it's entire surface area & not just the little bit by where the air comes in.If you have a turbo charged rocky keep an eye on the air filter to make sure it's not too dirty so the engine can breathe OK Because if it needs air & can't get it thru the airfilter it will get it from any where it can E.G. the turbo oil return line to motor bringing engine oil with it this is how turbo seals die.
Take my word for this I have seen it on many a turbo charged car not just diahatsu's
Hint when you pull up let your turbo chaged car idle for about 30 second or more to let the turbo cool down so the oil in it does not boil

No worries about the idle times... i got a turbo timer.. goes from 30s adjustable to 5 mins.
