Converting 10 spline to 24 spline

83 Rangie has 10 splines.
For the 24 splines conversion just want to make sure I will only need side pinion gears for the diffs. anything else?

How much do these new side gears run for ?

How much stronger is the 24 spline compared to the 10 spline? Is it same material?

Depends what bits you are using...

If you are using aftermarket axles and drive flanges, then you only need the 24 spline side gears.

If you are trying to use genuine (i.e. 24 spline disco) stuff, the later models (1993 on) had a narrower bearing spacing, so when you bolt everything up, to your rangie, the splines will be engaged in the diff by 10-12mm less than on a disco. So if you want to use genuine (post '93) 24 spline parts, you need to use the hubs and stub axles as well.

Ben I am planning on using the disco 24 splines so I will need just the outer hubs you mean?

How much stronger is a stock 24 spline compared to a stock 10 spline
Is the conversion worth it ?
I am looking at running 33 or 34 without lockers though on open diffs

You will need to use the hubs and stub axles from the disco as well. Don't know 100% which discs you need to use.

A 24 spline axle is 33% stronger than a 10 spline when both are made from the same material. Genuine axles should hold up fine to those tyre sizes with open diffs, if you aren't too heavy with the right foot.

Whether it is worth it or not depends on how much the conversion would cost. If it is too much then it might be worthwhile buying aftermarket (stronger) axles to suit the rangie - then you can keep the better early model hubs on the rangie.

If you are looking at running 34's and are going to go to all the expense of changing to 24 spline then I would spend a bit more and install lockers. If you put in the lockers from a series 2 Disco and buy the correct axels from maxidrive you will never have any problems.

I know 2 people in the past 3 months who have destroyed 24 spline diffs by running 33" Simex's without a locker.

I've done the same with 33" MTR's also.
