Need starter motor

I pulled the old starter out of my 1987 RR. It has a Lucas starter. It got a good clean up and works now but probably not for too long.
I've been quoted $120+parts to repair mine, (if parts are available for the Lucas) or $295 for a rebuilt Presolite, (never heard of them before).
What should I do, any other options?

go the new - there should be a reduction gear starter available for you, they make one that suits RR 1970 - 2000 and well worth it - much easier on the battery

The Lucas has a gearbox. Looked pretty good actually, a lot better than the solenoid contacts and the commutator.

Where would be the best place to buy one from?

prestolite aren't great.... had a lot of returns on them.... go rebuilt, or secure a secondhand HSE one.... should start a lot easier

I picked up one for around 200 ish (dont quote me on this) from rangie spares. It is a lot shorter in length and was told it cranks twice as hard. So far awesome. All i can remember about the price was that it was going to cost me just as much for a reco one as this new kind.

Hope it helps

I think crap would be a better description :x ............... and they leak water into the bellhousing when deep wading.

Rebuild the Lucas ;) .................. its about the only thing that Lucas ever got right. I have just finished rebuilding mine ........ the sooner that bl00dy prestolite comes off the better.

Prestolite are German with factorys in a few countries. They are the cheapest starter you can buy in UK. I bought one for series 111 and it was about $AU 120 new.
