G'day all,
Is there any chance of finding a snorkel to suit an F78 Rocky? As of now, i seem to think not!
Parts are hard to find for ye' olde Rock..
The guy off cardomain with the SPOA, had used a Nissan Patrol MQ snorkel... i wonder if it takes the same shape as the Rocky's one.. hmm
Has anyone got a snorkel.. if so was it custom or bought as is?
Any help appreciated guys
Nick.

Dont have one, but have read alot of threads here and in gen tech for DIY's and seem to be the best idea for other makes not just rocky as its much cheaper to just go to a zorst shop, and get em to bend up sum pipe to fit ur car. (means u can also get bling bling stainless steel if you so wish

), then all u need is the funny pre-cleaner doova on the top which you can easily source.
But i'm quite sure sum1 else will explain it betterera, or post a link to a previous thread

haha
Did you do that yourself?? Or was it fabricated by someone else??
How much did it cost all up man??

I had it made to my specs by windsor exhaust, cost under $300 with a second hand head.

Mad!! So you got it bent and welded, then you fitted it up? Like you drilled the hole and fitted it to the body? Top effort!
How big is the pipe diameter?

It was three inch aluminised mandrel bent pipe, I also ran a unifilter pre filter in the head of the snork.
Here's the link....

It certainly worked, I had water around half way up the windshield a couple of years back and no dramas...

Oh, there was nothing bent on it, it was straight sections and mandrel bends welded together.

Yeah i thought they were pre-fabbed bends welded to straight pipe.
I was thinking of running a one piece setup.. with the pipe having only bends and no welds in it. Be a much harder job though... bit cleaner finish is the only upside.. mightn't be worth it in the end

bending it shoudn't be any harder for a muffler place, after all, thats what they do with exhausts all the time.

Pre fabbed bends will be cheaper, if you want bling either get stainless and grind and polish or grind the welds in mild and paint...

Yeh I spose its much like intercooler piping.. how they shine it up and stuff like that on the buzzbox show cars
Might ask shops that specailise in that type of thing.. rather than a pure exhaust place
Yeh i want stainless bling

I cant imagine it costing that much, there was a thread a while ago in Gen 4x4 tech, about 3 pages long with heaps of peoples snorkels, alot said they cost'd round 150-200, not sure if it was SS though. The thread has mysteriously dissapeared unfortunately, it had alot of helpful info and pics

.

This ones old but the dude had SS one made for 200
EDIT: found the good thread with help from sum dood in chit chat

Don't forget, my price included the head, $30, the paint, $30 and the rubber induction hose $15... if that makes a difference.

what other mods are required to make thei a successful endeavour??
i.e sealing spark plugs, thermo fan etc etc?? what happens when your engine goes under water.. dizzy?
car seals hold up ok??

I wouldnt recommend doing this often with a petrol engine though...
You'd need to make sure no water gets anywhere near going into the electrics such as dizzy, plugs and leads as you said..
The seal between the air intake box and snorkel also must be watertight.. as water in there sitn always good
Yeah, does much water come into the cabin when you do big water crossings??
If you want to do big water crossings, buy a diesel

or a boat lol

Geez Louise !
I thought the idea of using mandrel bends and steel pipe was too save money! That costs more then a safari snorkel!!!
Looks like a $50 job too me, I think they saw you coming. Anyone that wants to do this should just buy a 3 inch mandrel donut and maybe a metre of 3 inch tube. Cant possible need anymore materials then this, apart from the top bit of course.
Ill stick to my Airtech heheh
cheers
Brad
PS. I had mandrel bent intercooler pipeing done up for my 180sx, at least 3 times the amount of pipe required for a snorkel and the entire job only cost $200. Shop around guys !!!

If you get a current price, most 'proper' snorkels are around the 500 mark, but i doo agree 300 was expensive, considering in that other thread sum dood said he got SS for 200 all bent up.

But a custom job never has a fixed price associated with it unlike the Safari snorkels where they make thousands of them in a run...
Its just nice to have sumthing different i think
I'd pay 300 for one... i thought it was a decent price.. he did say that included everything.. even the paint and the top head part.
