Diesel into Petrol 60 Series - What's Involved???

Hi Gurus,
I've been thinking for a while about pulling the petrol 2F out of my 60 series and putting in a diesel, firstly to get a greater range between fuel stops, but secondly I hope I will get a little more power to pull my camper trailer (especially if I turbo it) - I'm sick of cruising along at 100 on the flat and 60 up hills.
I assume a 2H would be the easiest swap, but what would be involved? Are the engine mounts the same? I think I will need to change radiators and exhaust. Is wiring a big job?
I don't really want to upgrade because the rest of the car is pretty much how I want it - front and rear diff locks, PTO winch etc and is in pretty good condition.
Any comments would be greatly accepted,
Tom.

A fair bet me thinks. I think a guy off the 4WD Monthly forum did it. Seems to be to much hassle. Too many$$$ considering you could sell your 60 and just buy a diesel 60. Oh didn;t see you have the lockers and winch. I'd have a look around first. Just my 2 cents tho....

well...
in my limited experience i don't think you'd pick up much more power with a turbo 2h (well sensibly turboed for reliability sake not talking 100 pound of boost), if any. non turbo-ed i think you'll feel it's grossly underpowered compared to the 2f.
having said that, i guess it's just wiring up glow plugs and glowplug timers, EDIC motor, plumbing the fuel lines etc.
alternatively, have you thought about getting a reasonable, running diesel 60, and swapping the good stuff (lockers, winch etc) over onto the other one. even body swap if the body on the new one is ratsh!t. probably work out about the same $$$ wise, and you'd have pretty much a whole petrol 60 to sell.
is your 2f on gas or petrol? on dual fuel you should get decent enough range using petrol and gas. or straight gas, tune it well, and run 2-3 gas tanks would give you range.
a well tuned gas 2f would be comparable power wise to a sensible turbo 2H i think
or maybe a V8 swap straight gas and a few more tanks (more fuel efficient than a 2f and power to spare) cheaper than a diesel swap.

if you get a donor vehicle there wont be much involved at all
if you try to do it just by buying the engine youl spend a crap load on all the little bits and pieces.
technically theres nothing challenging. The 2H has mechanical fuel pump so all you really need is the edic control system, and maybe a glow system (can make your own pushbutton)
Definantly look at getting a donor vehicle.
even if the engine needs a rebuild i think you will be better off this route than just buying an engine and parts.

I hear what you are saying!
The diesel has much more torque at approx 2000rpm which is what your cruiser will be at when you are doing a hundred K.... result is much better towing performance than a petrol
However I went for the 12HT and as stated by other people above the doner vehicle is the better option as I got a whole car cheaper than I could get the motor
But to answer your original question yes the engine mounts are different and one is further back than the other one, on the injector pump side and exhaust and radiator as you mentioned plus wiring for glow plugs (not required with 12HT direct injection) and you need to change petrol for diesel tacho and wire it up as well
P.S. .... I am keeping my donor vehicle now even with it's rough body, high Klm's and I still have a misfiring issue with the engine it has become the project car and I will swap my good bits over to it when you get the two side by side and while the swap over issues aren't that bad you end up with resale problems on both cars HJ60 with 2F and FJ60(mine is 73) with 2H or 12ht and the modification plates for both as well etc etc
well that my 2c
cheers

Thanks for all your replies.
My car is currently dual fuel. I get about 260km from a tank of gas (72ltrs) towing the camper, and a little over 300kms when not towing. I've also got 2 petrol tanks that hold about 110ltrs combined, but I try not to run petrol because of how thirsty it is. Last year travelling the Telegraph Track at Cape York I used about 70 ltrs of petrol to do 150km, while my mates with their diesels used bugger all!
I suppose at the end of the day, my car is reliable and while it might be slow, it does get there. I might have to stick with the petrol engine, and maybe look to getting a bigger gas tank, or maybe run 2 gas tanks.
Cheers,
Tom.
