Outer Limits 4x4 Board

I just picked up a '92 Rocky SE. Body is in great shape, needs some TLC to get on the road. Anyway, my BIL is getting ready to put Yota axles underneath his sami, and wants me to SAS the Rocky with his old Sami axles and springs. it should be fairly easy, as we will have everything available, from his sami to go onto the Rocky. as well as welders, grinders, and just about anything else we will need, between us and a few friends.

When I picked up the rocky I thought they already had solid front axles, but I looked , and saw an IFS. Bought it anyway.

Has anyone here done anything like this? Widths should be good.

Sami = Suzuki Samurai = Aussie Sierra?

I would have though the axle track would be too narrow if your Rocky is a widetrack version? I'd also imagine they would be a bit "lightweight" strength wise for the Rocky?

Search for posts from Toyhatsu and Besty- they've both done solid axle swaps and documented the proceedures on here.

Front track on the Zooks is around 1300mm, whereas the widetrack Rocky is 1480mm.. so its a bit small...

Also I'd think theyre a bit lightweight for the bigger Rocky..
Just ask your BIL why he is putting the Toyota Axels under his Samurai... and then think how much heavier the Rocky is then the small zook and how much more power is put through the drivetrain...

We're talking USA model Rocky's here - think wide track Feroza.

Exactly why they are saying that the axles you have in mind are to narrow.

The track of the widetrack Fez is about the same as my AUS SPEC (real) Rocky anyways.. still much bigger than a zook..

But the point is... This guys brother in law seems to think HIS axles in his Samurai aren't up to the task.. hence he is putting in Toyota axles...

Why are these going to be good in a Feroza, which is heavier and has a bigger motor etc than the donor car (Samurai)...
If you want SAS in your Fez.. do what he is doing.. get bigger ones

It says on this site that the Feroza (US Rocky) and the (Non-US) Rocky both have tracks of 1480mm... Only going by that..

What is the track of them then Monkey?

The 1480mm Track is for the Widetrack Rocky F78 as you'll note in the specs it says

Suspension: idependent torsion bar/live coil

F78's and F310's are the same width wise as are F300's and F70's, F75's etc any differences would be marginal.

And you just said they (F310) have the same track width as my F78 Rocky...???

If you read the FEROZA Specs and not the Aus. Rocky specs you'll see that the suspension states:
Front Suspension: Independant, upper & lower wishbones, torsion bar springs, anti-sway bar, 2 way gas / oil shocks
Rear Suspension: Live Axle, Leaf Springs, 2 way gas / oil shocks

OK. maybe I should have put out more information. I am not new to wheeling. i have been building IH Scouts for about 10 years. I know all about axle width, and torque ratio, and all the other crap involved in building decent and even hard core wheelers.

I am new to the Daihatsu though, and was wondering if anyone wanted to share some insite, not flame me.

I prefer Dana 44s, of which I do have a set available. I also have a set of toyota axles that I can use.

I asked about the Sami axles because I am not looking at building this to be hardcore, just enough to play with.

rockys are hard to find here in the states so any extra yanks on the site are greatly welcomed. dont mind the aussies as they are a bit possessive, but are overall pretty friendly.

i think your best bet would be to install toyota axles as toyota is the parent company of daihatsu. you'll notice alot of parts are basically the same, only problem is, they're modified enough so they are not interchangeable. now kent has the most extreme rocky in the states and he has yoda axles under his. look him up and drop him a pm if you like.

if you need anything, feel free to contact me or kent through pm or email. let us know what you decide on your build. maybe you should take the rocky out without making any major driveline modifications and see what she can do. i think you'd be surprised at how capable she is! also, dont be afraid to redline her, she can take it.

I didn't read the wrong part. You obviously missed the part i asked if you had a Widetrack Rocky or not in my first post in this thread which you didn't answer. Scroll up and have a look

F310 - F78 same wheel track as both widetrack models and both the models specified on the WARFS website.

F300 - All other rocky's same or similiar as all "narrow track" versions. Fairly simple

I only took you saying you had a "real" Rocky as you having one with a solid front axle Hence any model other then the F78
