Outer Limits 4x4 Board

Well i"ve bought a patrol. It has seen better days but i'll tidy it up in due course. It is a 89 GQ, 4.2 diesel 5speed. It has an oil leak on the front passenger side of the diff, looks like it's coming out of the swivel hub anddown the isnide of the wheel. Any ideas on what it would be and what's involved with repairing it.

Congratulations for your car!! (how much did you paid for it?)

Cause of the leaking: king pin bearings that must be replaced or re-tied.
How-to-replace it: get out the wheel, the brakes, the swivel hub, the CV. Into the axle there is a metalic-plastic seal (about 40 mm diameter). Take it out (by destroying it...;-((, replace it (make sure you press it well on the entire circumference) and reinstall everything.
Estimated time: 2 1/2 hours for a normal guy.
Tips: (as Bruce or Buzzle - I can't remember now!! - said to me months ago;-)).: when reinstalling the passenger CV try to be caaaaaalm...because it can take a while (not very difficult, but not soo easy too..)

It's a bit more detailed than that, but IMO (not trying to be smart here) if you dont have the knowledge or the confidence to do it yourself, perhaps you should pay someone to replace it for you. The front end of a GQ is not something that you want to mess up (2500kg of truck does not feel good getting funky at 100km/hour)

The problem is an inner axle seal - the seal keeps the oil in the diff housing, away from the swivel hub. When the oil gets into the swivel hub it dissolves the MB grease (worked into the CV) and makes a real mess. Then the MB grease eats the other seals (abrades the seal surfaces).
