Fuel sender question?

Hi guys,
We have put an extra fuel tank in my mates 2.4 diesel hilux. The aux tank is out of an old petrol hilux and is mounted beside the original. I have run the fuel gauge wiring & changeover solenoid through a double pole changeover switch but we can't get the aux tank gauge to register. Everything tests ok but still no movement. I'm starting to think that the petrol model and the diesel model may run different voltages to the sender. The diesel is running about 5 volts i think from memory. Does anyone know if this could be the case? The aux tank sender worked fine in the old vehicle. The voltages in both wiring circuits on the diesel are the same and shorting the wiring at the aux tank brings the gauge up so no prob there!
We're at a bit of a standstill with it and will chase up a diesel sender if that is the problem. Thanks in advance for any help. Wasn't sure if this should be in auto electrical or here???
Cheers................Pete!
