Noisy 4500 GU?

Hello everybody, I have just picked up a 2001 4500 ST, manual with 100,000km on it.

The lifters/tappets seem quite noisy at idle to low revs (after that all you can hear is fan as expected) can't really hear it in the car or driving, just when you jump out of the cabin. Make sense?

I'm just wondering if they are a tad loud normally or somethings up. I'm comparing to an AU falcon which is dead quiet so maybe I'm expecting too much, I don't have access to another 4.5 to listen too so I'll ask here.

For all you search Nazi's I searched and turned over nothing. :finger:

Thanks in advance

on the TB45 the tappets are adjustable so just adjust them up i think its 14thou on inlet and exhaust when vehicle is hot it is reccomended to do them every 20 - 40k on them moreso at 20 if it is on gas

Sweet, I bought a car that's a 2001 model that I have to adjust the tappets on! :bad-words: I thought that fashion died in the 80's!

I'm emotional. Nissan must think it's trendy to be retro?

Thanks for that info though dude. I read somewhere else that .014" should see fit on inlet and exhaust, what's that in metric? And is there anything else I should know before whipping the rocker cover off? Will I need a new gasket? I have done bikes before so I imagine it's the same, get each piston to TDC and adjust?

Thanks in advance for your help!

According to my GQ manual, you set the first piston on TDC and then do the tappets and then turn the engine over to TDC for the 6th piston and do the remaining.

I have to do 15 thou but I might try 14 thou just to see if that makes the engine lesss rattly.

Get yourself a manual it helps a lot.

road nazi if you know of a place that sells a manuel for a 4500ltr gu your doing well .

mine was tappy did an adjustment sorted it for a while than the nosie came back but this time it was an exhaust manifold gasket leak , than once i corrected that about a month later another noise sounding like tappets was one of my hi tension leads was arching , there was a post a couple months ago about the tappets , poor quality or something , .
i believe the firing order would be 1 5 3 6 2 4 if so turn eng over to tdc number 1 compression stroke and adjust exhaust 135 and inlet 124 than turn the engine over a full 360 degrees number 1 exhaust stroke (number 6 compression stroke) and do exhaust 246 and inlet 356.
the gasket is reusable , but if ya gu is lifted get comfortable sitting on the bull bar , as its a long stretch to the back if your standing at the front .

cheers Jai

you can replace the gasket if you like buddy but they are pretty good and can be reused half a dozen times without an issue because they are rubber just dont overtighten it, and the easiest way is to get TDC then adjust witch ever ones are loose then get BDC and adjust what ever is loose, cant go wrong

If your tappets become noisy again, replace the pushrods on the noisy ones as they where the top of the rod out on the 4.5's ;)
