Problems with Pump or Valves in 3L

Hi everyone , i hope someone can help me out , i've a damn trouble that has been taking my sleep time away , so here we go:

I've a 3L Engine , and after i changed the stock air filter for a conic one , the result was good anyway , it ran smooth and faster.

Around 3 days later , the engine started to smoke a bit , then a lot , the fuel consumption went to the sky , and appeared a loud 'tic' that is directly related to engine revolutions , it sounds like the clasic valve tic tic that appears when one or more are sticky. and the power went down too.

So , does anyone knows what can be this? a Pump problem? valves? the pressure of the engine seems to be Okey , its arround 33 and 38 .

Please help me!

Mine does something that sounds very similar after it hasn't had a good long run for a while. It seems to take about a good hour of highway driving before it shuts up and takes a few weeks or sometime months to surface again. Still don't know what it is???

But does it smokes when you hear that sound? , mine yes , and it lose a bit of power...
and the sound is really LOUD....

dammit , what can be that?

did this happen instantly or was it a gradual progession to the loud tapping sound, black smoke and poor fuel economy? My timing belt jumped a tooth not long ago and sounds a lot like your problem, although i wasnt blowing a lot of black smoke and didnt notice fuel economy cos i got it fixed immediately. This happened instantly, i was just driving a long and then all of a sudden it started tapping very loudly.

It was gradual , the loud tapping appeared with the same level of noise from its beginning , peraphs is that, can be the valves? how can i check that? , as i this engine works with shims and to get the right one i should use somekind of special tool for that , that is true?

Dammit , appears to be a common problem on 3L... i'll be reporting my progress (if i get something like that) and we'll see...

There was a thread a couple of weeks ago about someone who got an oil treatment thing done to his hilux? I think where they drained, flushed cleaned and put new oil in. I wonder if that would clean up any build up around the valves????

Uff im already throw the towel and i left the lux in a friend's garage , they will dissasemble the engine to check what's going on ,..

Today i did the following things myself to check the noise:

a) injectores -> they present wear but still works
b) injector pump -> seems to have no trouble at all
c) valves , i checked the shims and they are quite good adjusted , the noise SEEMS to be from them , so i ran the engine without the valve cover and well... didnt find which one is.
d) timming belt , i ran the engine without the cover and the belt was ok...

finnaly i dont know what da hell is going on.

My last last last step was to remove one by one each engine injector nozzle just to see what happened with the engine , the 1st piston showed an almost no change without the injector , all the other impacted the engine in a very notorious way.

So if anyone else can have a hint at this point PLEASE.. letme now... i would rather wait than spend the money in engine gaskets plus the time.

pd: my compression was very good 1st: 35 , 2d 36 3rd 38 4th 38 [kg/cm2]

by the sounds of it then its number 1 injector, but see what your mates find out, best to fork out the $$ and get it fixed properly.

Yah , the idea is to get as far possible with the engine , but just wondering , how long should i run the engine without troubles after a complete rebuild? how many km/mileage approx?

And as i was also trying to install a CT20 Turbo (2LT Turbo) , should i bore a bit the pistons to make a pre-chamber ?

Found the ticking noise in mine yesterday after I got sick of it on the drive back from Willowbank, there were three loose exhaust manifold bolts which were letting exhaust out before the turbo. Will have it back to gether this arvo and hopefully all will be quiet, well relative to a diesel anyway...

A question relating to this......
I know i should know this but asking other peoples opinons?

If your cam gear mark is slightly out by 2mm (retarded) could this cause a ticking noise? or should i advance it which would leave the cam gear mark lining up with the cylinder head?
